Although crude petroleum contains small amounts of oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur, its major constituents are hydrocarbons—compounds of carbon and hydrogen. Isolating individual hydrocarbon substances from petroleum mixtures is an industrial process of central importance. Moreover, it provides a fascinating story that illustrates how the structures of molecules determines the properties of substances and the behavior of those substances in particular processes. The next three sections present a brief introduction to this story, emphasizing the structure-property correlations. [Pg.277]

Excited-state processes in polymer materials strongly depend on their electronic and structural properties. There are several types of polymers that are capable of energy transfer and migration. A polymer with a saturated backbone and pendant chromo-phores such as naphthalene, anthracene, and commercial dyes can be described as type I polymer [11], In some cases, the chromophore has also been incorporated as a component of the polymer backbone repeat unit or covalently linked to the polymer as a terminal end group. Typically, introduction of the chromophore is achieved through premodification of the monomers or postfunctionalization of the polymers. [Pg.4]

The introduction of metal complexes into polymeric materials can lead to interesting properties and, particularly, the structural properties of these complexes are of importance in self-healing materials [9]. It can be important for the self-healing process that special properties can be changed uprm applicadmi... [Pg.244]

Melt spinning is not limited to the production of conventional polymeric filaments various developments in terms of type of filaments, structure-property relationships, introduction of nano materials, and advances in process characterization have evolved in the last few years. Some of these developments are briefly discussed below. [Pg.88]

Focuses on force field calculations for understanding the dynamic properties of proteins and nucleic acids. Provides a useful introduction to several computational techniques, including molecular mechanics minimization and molecular dynamics. Includes discussions of research involving structural changes and short time scale dynamics of these biomolecules, and the influence of solvent in these processes. [Pg.4]
