Processing autoclave molding

The oldest technology involved in the elastomer blending and vulcanization process is essentially a temperature controlled two roll mill as well as internal mixers followed by an optimum degree of crosslinking in autoclave molds (compression, injection, etc.) in a batch process or in a continuous process such as continuously heated tube or radiated tubes. A few examples of laboratory scale preparation of special purpose elastomeric blends is cited here. 

Molding processes include compression molding, resin transfer molding (RTM), injection molding and reaction injection molding (RIM), autoclave molding, and several types of specific processes such as shell molding, which is used in foundries. 

Autoclave molding, the process of curing thermoset resins at elevated temperature and pressure in an inert environment, has an important role in the fabrication of continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastics. Autoclave molding is also similar to vacuum bag and hand-layup molding, except that the pressure plate is removed and the entire mold and layup are placed in an autoclave. The chief advantages of autoclave molding processes are faster cycle times and improved physical properties. 

Autoclave molding usually involves heat (up to 260°C), pressure (35-50 psi) and vacuum. This method is particularly attractive for processing condensation-type polyimides and some processable polyimides. ...
