Future Methanol Processes. The process route for methanol synthesis has remained basically unchanged since its inception by BASF in 1923. The principal developments have been in catalyst formulation to increase productivity and selectivity, and in process plant integration to improve output and energy efficiency while decreasing capital cost. 

The task of process synthesis is to evaluate these schemes and select the best. The creative possibilities of design do not stop here. For example, these separations can be carried out by heat integration, by multiple-draw columns, or by use of processes other than distillation many other variations are possible.

Initial work on the design of structured products has been presented by, for example, Meeuse et al. 2000, Wibowo and Ng, 2001, 2002. In this chapter a real life example of a process redesign project where process synthesis techniques were applied to a structured food product, is presented. First, we position this work in the framework of integrated product and process design. Then we describe how we translated existing process synthesis techniques into a useful methodology for structured products. Then the actual case study is presented. Finally some perspectives are given.

The principle of integral process development [26] covers much more than just the optimization of a process. This approach begins with computer-aided decision procedures in the conception phase. Tools are available in which the process structure is suggested, for example should the process be a batch or a continuous operation The software tool for process synthesis PROSYN uses databases which include knowledge of experts, material data and calculation models for unit operations. Interfaces to process simulation tools such as ASPENPLUS and material databases are also supplied. PROSYN also delivers an economic evaluation of the future production process. 

It should also always be borne in mind, that process integration inherently entails a loss of degrees of freedom (Fig. 7.20), and the designer of a multifunctional reactor must always seek additional design variables, which might enable them to better harmonize the demands of the two underlying operations. The multiscalar architecture of the process and the structured distribution of the functionalities within it must be analyzed in the context of the process synthesis if this objective is to be realized [61],...
