Procedural learning

Rule-based At the middle level, these are performance tasks that involve actions governed by training and procedures that are executed consistently by different operators across a facility. These typically correspond to written procedures learned in operations and maintenance classrooms and on-the-job training. An example of a mistake associated with rule-based performance is the omission of a step in a formal written procedure. [Pg.83]

The empirical studies reviewed below show that (a) correct performance is possible even in the absence of knowledge about the underlying concepts and principles, (b) knowledge about concepts and principles does not guarantee correct performance, and that (c) knowledge of principles does facilitate performance and procedure learning under some conditions. Each group of studies will be summarized in turn. [Pg.85]

Speciai Firefighting Procedures Learn procedures and responsibilities in the event of a fire in your workplace. Become familiar with the appropriate equipment and supplies and their location. In firefighting, withdraw immediately in case of rising sound from venting safety device or any discoloration of storage tank due to fire. [Pg.1174]

Figure 9-17. Outline of the procedure for supervised learning The output of the netw/ork is compared with the target value or vector, which yields the error The weights of the network are then adapted to reduce this error. These compounds can be made from the starting materials listed in this chapter in a fev steps. Try to find out starting materials and propose synthetic procedures of your own Then compare with the procedures given in the journal. If you regularly make up your own problems from scientific journals, work them through seriously, and slowly get to more complicated target molecules, you cannot fail to learn a lot about solving synthetic problems in a realistic manner ... [Pg.214]

You learned in Section 17 8 of the relationship among hemiacetals ketones and alcohols the for mation of phenol and acetone is simply an example of hemiacetal hydrolysis The formation of the hemiacetal intermediate is a key step in the synthetic procedure it is the step in which the aryl—oxygen bond is generated Can you suggest a reasonable mechanism for this step" ... [Pg.1023]

Before the widespread availability of instrumental methods the major approach to structure determination relied on a battery of chemical reactions and tests The response of an unknown substance to various reagents and procedures provided a body of data from which the structure could be deduced Some of these procedures are still used to supple ment the information obtained by instrumental methods To better understand the scope and limitations of these tests a brief survey of the chemical reactions of carbohydrates is m order In many cases these reactions are simply applications of chemistry you have already learned Certain of the transformations however are unique to carbohydrates... [Pg.1052]

It is apparent that the use of enzymatic catalysis continues to grow Greater availabiUty of enzymes, development of new methodologies for thek utilization, investigation of enzymatic behavior in nonconventional environments, and the design and synthesis of new biocatalysts with altered selectivity and increased stabiUty are essential for the successhil development of this field. As more is learned about selectivity of enzymes toward unnatural substrates, the choice of an enzyme for a particular transformation will become easier to predict. It should simplify a search for an appropriate catalyst and help to estabhsh biocatalytic procedures as a usehil supplement to classical organic synthesis. [Pg.350]

After the incident, an investigation team determined that the first operator had not added the initiator when required earlier in the process. When the relief operator added the initiator, the entire monomer mass was in the reactor and the reaction was too energetic for the cooling system to handle. Errors by both operators contributed to the runaway. Both operators were performing many tasks. The initiator should have been added much earlier in the process when much smaller quantities of monomer were present. There was also no procedure to require supervision review if residual monomers were detected. The lesson learned was that operators need thorough training and need to be made aware of significant hazardous scenarios that could develop. [Pg.130]

In addition, a properly designed JHA is a good learning tool that you can use to evaluate incidents. Job-related incidents occur every day in the workplace. These incidents, which include injuries and fatalities, often occur because employees are not trained in the proper job procedures. One way to reduce these workplace incidents is to develop proper job procedures and train all employees in the safer and more efficient work methods. [Pg.43]
