Systematic Problem Solving

San, Y. T., Jin, Y. T., Song, C. L. (2011b). TRIZ Theory of inventive problem solving—systematic innovation in manufacturing. Fruits Publication, Malaysia. [Pg.186]

Problem Solving Methods Most, if not aU, problems or applications that involve mass transfer can be approached by a systematic-course of action. In the simplest cases, the unknown quantities are obvious. In more complex (e.g., iTmlticomponent, multiphase, multidimensional, nonisothermal, and/or transient) systems, it is more subtle to resolve the known and unknown quantities. For example, in multicomponent systems, one must know the fluxes of the components before predicting their effective diffusivities and vice versa. More will be said about that dilemma later. Once the known and unknown quantities are resolved, however, a combination of conservation equations, definitions, empirical relations, and properties are apphed to arrive at an answer. Figure 5-24 is a flowchart that illustrates the primary types of information and their relationships, and it apphes to many mass-transfer problems. [Pg.592]

When esterase models are designed, several important and fundamental problems have to be solved. Systematic studies on other interactions, such as hydrogen-bonding and charge-transfer type forces have not been fully performed. Furthermore, various cooperative actions between different kinds of interactions, e. g. the correlation between the attraction of substrate and repulsion of a product by a polyelectrolyte catalyst, has not yet been carried. [Pg.176]

The logical approach to problem solving for rubber analysis at Polysar Ltd was described by Chu [73] (cf. Schemes 2.4 and 2.5). Systematic analysis involves sampling, elimination of interference and measurement. Methods employed include chromatography (GC, HS-GC, HPLC, SEC, IC), spectroscopy (AAS, UV/VIS, IR, NMR), MS, microscopy and thermal analysis. The specific role of each of these techniques for the analysis of rubber compounds with or without... [Pg.37]

In the second part of the paper examples of the system in action will be given. We feel that because our system uses clearly defined rules for creating generalizations, it may offer fresh insights and solutions to problems. Rules for generalization can be systematically modified. The question of how such modifications affect the problem solving capabilities of the system is unanswered. [Pg.211]

Fire protection is a science that stretches as far back as the Roman Empire. The aqueducts and the Corp of Vigilantes gave the Romans what they needed for fire protection and control. Through the years, the practice of fire protection has evolved from a problem-solving approach to a mature, systematic discipline. [Pg.8]

Although several different system configurations have been simulated, the focus of this paper will be on the unsteady, compressible, multiphase flow in an axisymmetric ramjet combustor. After a brief discussion of the details of the geometry and the numerical model in the next section, a series of numerical simulations in which the physical complexity of the problem solved has been systematically increased are presented. For each case, the significance of the results for the combustion of high-energy fuels is elucidated. Finally, the overall accomplishments and the potential impact of the research for the simulation of other advanced chemical propulsion systems are discussed. [Pg.112]

This first sample question is followed by a step-by-step analysis that shows you how to use common sense and a systematic problem-solving approach to select the best possible answer. You might want to try working out the answer yourself before you read the explanation that follows. [Pg.193]

Considering the last two paragraphs one encounters an other problem of systematic drug design In order to select appropriate test compounds one needs to know the relevant parameters. These in turn can only be found through structure-activity-analysis based on the selected compounds. In other words, one needs to know the results which are obtained from the test series before this series can be designed properly. How can this problem be solved As in other similar cases (e.g. the calculation of orbital energies in quantum mechanics) an iterative procedure can be applied. Such a procedure is visualized in Scheme 1. [Pg.16]

The two aspects of documentation are documenting care delivered to patients and documenting progress toward meeting practice plan objectives. The problem-oriented medical record is used by health care professionals to convey information about patient care. The problem-oriented medical record is a means to organize observations into a systematic, problem-solving approach that can be conveyed to others. The problem-oriented approach to documentation is intended to streamline the amount of reading that practitioners must do to update themselves on a patient s status. [Pg.253]

There are many ways you can predict trends in an industry, and there are numerous trend gurus whose work could be helpful. We like the work of Genrich Altshuller, the founder of the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ), because it s one of the most empirical approaches. We also favor the work of U.K.-based author Darrell Mann, who has built on Altshuller s paradigm oi systematic innovation to refine it for further use. [Pg.91]

Any self-developed method or discipline will consist of personal features and individual points of view that may or may not reflect the opinion of the majority which may not necessarily be the most valid position. One should expect, therefore, that the criteria of those readers who have already created their own systematic approach to problem solving in mechanistic organic chemistry may be in conflict with some sensitive points expressed here. In addition, there are those who feel that rules in general jeopardize their ability to create and thus to find original solutions to problems. [Pg.176]
