Purpose. You will carry out the multistep synthesis of the epoch-making antibacterial drug, sulfanilamide.You wiU learn the techniques for handling moisture sensitive materials and investigate the strategies involved in solving a synthetic organic problem. 

In the previous few chapters, we developed several synthesis strategies that enable us to move the location of a functional group or change its identity. Let s briefly review these techniques, as they will be extremely helpful when solving multistep synthesis problems. 

Because many students enjoy the challenge of designing multistep syntheses and find them to be a good test of their understanding of reactivity, many new examples of retro-synthetic analysis have been added. There are also new solved problems and problemsolving strategies on multistep synthesis.
