Problem Rusting Is Identified on Metal Components

During the processing of fuels, acids such as sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid are used. Sulfuric acid can be used to polymerize fuel olefins and remove components from fuel such as mercaptans and thiophenes. Sulfuric and hydrofluoric acids are used in the alkylation process to produce high-octane, branched paraffins. Carryover of these acids into fuel can initiate ferrous metal corrosion. [Pg.209]

Water contamination of fuel occurs. Water can originate from fuel processing, atmospheric condensation, or external sources. Water may contain dissolved salts, may be acidic or basic, or may contain solubilized organic compounds. Water-initiated corrosion can result. [Pg.209]

Microorganisms can establish growth colonies or plaques on metal surfaces. Corrosion of underlying metal can be severe. Both bacterial and fungal species can initiate this type of corrosion. [Pg.209]
