A prime practical consideration in the use of the IP route for acute testing should be the utilization of aseptic techniques to preclude bacterial or viral contamination. If these are not exercised, the resulting infected and compromised animals cannot be expected to produce either valid or reproducible indications or actual chemical toxicity. 

The calorific capacity of amino acids is comparable to that of carbohydrates so despite their prime importance in maintaining structural integrity of cells as proteins, amino acids may be used as fuels especially during times when carbohydrate metabolism is compromised, for example, starvation or prolonged vigorous exercise. Muscle and liver are particularly important in the metabolism of amino acids as both have transaminase enzymes (see Figures 6.2 and 6.3 and Section 6.4.2) which convert the carbon skeletons of several different amino acids into intermediates of glycolysis (e.g. pyruvate) or the TCA cycle (e.g. oxaloacetate). Not all amino acids are catabolized to the same extent...

The approach taken to develop these costing equations was to single out the most important parameters that influence cost, and use them to yield a base cost, designating them with a prime (i.e. Z ). This base cost is then adjusted by multiplication factors so as to incorporate the influence of other factors. The form of these equations has been suggested in the literature (10-12) and by experienced engineers, then curve fit to available data. However, extreme care must be exercised when applying any of these equations in the field. 

HAZOP and What-If reviews are a basically a communication exercise. Information is presented, discussed, analyzed and recorded. Specifically the safety aspects are identified, to determine if adequate design measures have be taken to prevent major accidents. Communication and evaluation are the prime facets of the procedures. 

The supplier should be able to demonstrate that an FDS is produced in response to the pharmaceutical organization s URS. Typically, the FDS will be a standard document for the core product application with deviations from the standard offering documented in an addendum or separate project-based document. Deviations usually warrant some degree of tailored software development and should, therefore, be of prime consideration during the validation exercise. Table 31.8 provides typical content of the FDS. 

These statements are quite general, and we are not told exactly how the satisfaction of existing needs generates new ones. In Marx s work there appear to be two. quite different, suggestions. First, there is the idea that the exercise of a capacity may itself become a need. In the Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts Marx observes that "When communist artisans associate with one another, theory, propaganda etc. is their first end. But at the same time, as a result of this association, they acquire a new need -the need for society - and what appears as a means becomes an end." Similarly, in communism "work is not only a means to life, but itself has become the prime need of life". An important feature of this process is that the new needs develop in the very same individuals whose capacities had developed as a response to earlier needs. 

In the following exercises and problems, it is recommended that rate constants are labeled with the number of the step in the proposed reaction mechanism and that any reverse steps are labeled similarly but with a prime. 

A prime objective of automation is to eliminate the need for human intervention in a process. Although this may be applied literally in, for example, process control, the clinical laboratory environment described above requires more constraints. Skilled human judgment is essential for monitoring the viability of the sample and the validity and significance of the results. Therefore, automation is aimed at aiding the clinical analyst in the exercise of these skills. 

It is, of course, an usual practice to have a chemical laboratory directly under the command and supervision of a senior cadre laboratory technical personnel who should be consulted, as and when required, for his expert opinion and advice. It is, however, pertinent to mention here that two vital universal truths and norms, namely first, exercise of utmost care and secondly, adoption of strict safe-working procedures, should be the prime responsibility of each and every individual working in a chemistry laboratory. No compromise, whatsoever, must be made with regard to even an iota of doubt as to the safety of a proposed experimental procedure yet to be undertaken. Liberal consultation, advice from senior research personnels, academic supervisors should be sought freely and frankly without the slightest hesitation in one s mind.
