Primary magnesium

The energy required to melt and cast recycled magnesium is approximately 6.7 MJ/kg (2865 Btu/lb) (74) compared to the 267 MJ/kg (115,000 Btu/lb) to produce primary magnesium by the most efficient technology available. 

Commercial primary magnesium has a typical purity of 99.8%, which is sufficient for most chemical and metallurgical uses. A typical analysis might be expected to show about 0.003% each of aluminum and copper, 0.04% iron, 0.08% manganese, 0.001% nickel, and 0.005% siHcon. Primary magnesium is available in five grades (Table 3). Considerably higher purity can be obtained by distillation. 

Magnesium is employed ki a wide variety of appHcations, based on its chemical, electrochemical, physical, and mechanical properties. The International Magnesium Association (IMA) divides the markets for magnesium kito 10 categories and tracks the volume of primary magnesium shipments to each market area on an annual basis.

The most extensive use of magnesium castings in automobiles commenced in 1936. with the inlroduciinu of the Volkswagen Beetle. Each Beetle used from 40 to 51) pounds (18 m 2.3 kg) of primary magnesium ingot plus scrap metal. 

Zinc perchlorate and magnesium perchlorate can be used as electrolytes in aqueous -> zinc and primary - magnesium batteries. For example, zinc perchlorate is used as an electrolyte in dry cells comprising zinc anodes and manganese dioxide cathodes.
