Primary energy sources, worldwide consumption

Unlike other primary energy sources, the global consumption of uranium exceeds its production. Worldwide consumption in 2005 amounted to 66 500 tU (NEA/ IAEA, 2006b).9 As Fig. 4.3 shows, newly mined and processed uranium (primary supply) exceeded reactor-related uranium requirements until 1991. Since 1991, the gap between primary supply and uranium demand has been filled by secondary supply, i.e., material that has been held in inventory (both civilian and military in origin) or has been reprocessed. Besides reprocessed uranium and plutonium of spent... [Pg.124]

Oiu present situation concerning major (fossil) energy carriers and energy consumption is characterized by limited reserves and resources as well as enussion problems, considering crude oil, natural gas, coal, and uranium as primary energy sources. At the same time, the worldwide demand for electrical energy has increased from 8.3 million GWh in 1980 to 18.9 million GWh in 2006 and is estimated to further increa.se up to 30.7 million GWh in 2030 (see [1] (Fig. 4.1). [Pg.78]

Worldwide, natural starch is an important energy food. The staple food of a country provides the primary source of starch for example, corn in Mexico roots, tubers, and sorghum in parts of Africa and rice in India, China and Indonesia. Starch is an economical food hence, it contributes a large portion to the diets where income is low. As income increases, the amount of starch in the diet decreases while consumption of fat, animal protein, and sugar increase. [Pg.987]
