Prevention of pregnancy

The operation of each part of the vomeronasal sense, from the semiochemicals of frogs to the prevention of pregnancy in mice, is further considered in Chaps. 5 and 7. 

As to be expected, the most common goal of contraception is the prevention of pregnancy. However, some patients may use contraceptive methods for other benefits, such as menstrual cycle regulation, reduction of premenstrual symptoms, or treatment of acne. 

As an alternative to oral contraceptive pills, which must be taken daily in order to reliably prevent pregnancy, non-oral contraceptives in the form of transdermal, transvaginal, and injectable preparations are available and offer patients safe and effective alternatives to the pills for prevention of pregnancy. These formulations also do not require daily administration, making them more convenient than the pill formulations. 

As an alternative to hormonal contraceptives, several barrier contraceptive options are available for the prevention of pregnancy. While barrier contraceptives are associated with far fewer adverse effects compared with hormonal contraceptives, their efficacy is highly user-dependent. Contraception is the prevention of pregnancy following sexual intercourse by inhibiting sperm from reaching a mature ovum (i.e., methods that act as barriers or prevent ovulation) or by preventing a fertilized ovum from implanting in the endometrium (i.e., mechanisms that create an unfavorable uterine environment). 

Appropriate barrier methods and vaginal formulations are the first line of defense against the prevention of pregnancy and STDs. Recognition of this fact and initiation of work to develop traly novel systems should be a major development focus. Indeed, major efforts are under way to develop new and more effective microbiocides, excipient delivery vehicles, and subsequent formulations.

Contraceptive For the prevention of pregnancy. Start new patients on preparations containing 35 meg or less estrogen. 

Emergency contraception (Plan B and Proven only) For prevention of pregnancy following unprotected intercourse or a known or suspected contraceptive failure. To obtain efficacy, take the first dose as soon as possible within 72 hours of intercourse. The second dose must be taken 12 hours later. Emergency contraceptive pills are not indicated for ongoing pregnancy protection and should not be used as a woman s routine form of contraception. 

Prevention of pregnancy The implant system is a long-term (5 years or less) reversible contraceptive system. Remove the capsules by the end of the 5th year new capsules may be inserted at that time if continuing contraceptive protection is desired. 

Prevention of pregnancy It is a long-term injectable contraceptive in women when administered at 3-month intervals.
