The present title consists of twelve chapters. The first chapter is an introduction covering definition, classification, properties, world reserves, methods of processing from ores, methods of separation both classical and modem, and analytical chemistry of rare earths, including classical and modem methods. 

American Oil Chemists Society. Although there is no publication devoted exclusively to the field of edible fats, there is one very excellent American periodical devoted to the broader field of all fats and oils and related materials. This is the Journal of the American Oil Chemists Society, which is now in its thirty-fifth year of publication, initially as the Chemists Section of the Cotton Oil Press. In 1924 it was a quarterly called the Journal of Oil and Fat Industries, and it became a monthly in 1926. In 1932 the name was changed to Oil and Soap in 1947 the present title was adopted. After funds had been placed at the disposal of the American Petroleum Institute, Dr. Washburn asked for financial support for the project which he had already established at the bureau. On January 10, 1927, the American Petroleum Institute placed funds at his disposal and established at the National Bureau of Standards the research investigation which has become internationally known as Project 6. API Research Project 44. API Research Project 44 was established in 1942 to collect, analyze, calculate, and compile data on the physical, thermodynamic, and spectral properties of hydrocarbons and related compounds. Prior to November 1949, the title of this project was Collection, Analysis, and Calculation of Data on the Properties of Hydrocarbons. Its present title is Data on Hydrocarbons and Related Compounds. Although Project 44 is sponsored and financed by the API and functions under the ACFRCPP, and was designed to serve the petroleum industry, it soon became worldwide in significance. There was no unquestioned, authoritative compilation of such data in existence prior to the establishment of this project 10 years ago. 

His contacts are and have been truly international, and with this perspective he recently wrote The International Paper Trade and has now collaborated with Clive Capps to produce the recently published Current practice in environmental reporting the pulp and paper industry, and now this present title dealing with the chemicals industry.

Specialist societies of chemical interest are also to be found in most Commonwealth countries. In Australia the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (55 Collins Place, Melbourne, C.l), founded in 1917 publishes its Proceedings and Reviews of Pure and Applied Chemistry. The Chemical Institute of Canada (48 Rideau Street, Ottawa 2) was founded in 1921 as the Canadian Institute of Chemistry and adopted the present title in 1945. Its aims are to encourage general interest in chemistry and chemical engineering, to promote scientific collaboration, and to maintain the educational professional and material standards of chemists in Canada. It publishes the Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry in Canada. The Indian Chemical Society (University College of Science Buildings, 92 Upper Circular Road, Calcutta 9) publishes the Indian Journal of Applied Chemistry.
