It is often possible to replace a primary amine in a reductive alkylation by a nitrogen compound such as a nitro or nitroso compound or nitrile that can be converted into the primary amine by the reduction. For example, A-alkyl-and A,iV-dialkyl-anilines can be prepared from nitrobenzene in a single operation.1010,1011 Directions for the preparation of A-alkylarylamines from aromatic nitro compounds are given on page 555. [Pg.523]

Names in small capital letters refer to the titles of individual preparations. A number in ordinary bold-face type denotes the volume. A number in bold-face italics refers to a page which gives preparative directions for substances formed either as principal products or as by-products numbers in ordinary type indicate pages on which a compound or a subject is mentioned in connection with other preparations. For example. Acetone cyanohydrin, SO, 42, 43, indicates that acetone cyanohydrin is mentioned on page 42, and that directions for its preparation are given in detail on page 43, of Volume 20. [Pg.99]

Preparations for the Analysis.— The sharp edges of the combustion tube are rounded by careful heating in a blast-flame. After cooling the tube is rinsed out with water several times this is allowed to drain off, and the tube dried by one of the methods given on page 70. [Pg.99]
