Comparative calculations of specific capacities of different filters or their specific filter areas should be made as part of the evaluation. Such calculations may be performed on the basis of experimental data obtained without using basic filtration equations. In designing a new filtration unit after equipment selection, calculations should be made to determine the specific capacity or specific filtration area. Basic filtration equations may be used for this purpose, with preliminary experimental constants evaluated. These constants contain information on the specific cake resistance and the resistance of the filter medium. [Pg.80]

This contribution deals with some important aspects of coal structure evaluation using modified Gaussian models. Further clarification of the nature and functionality of the crosslinks is presented, including an analysis of refinements in the mathematical equations for the determination of Mc. Preliminary experimental data of relevance to this analysis are also presented and discussed. [Pg.51]

The choice of variables remaining with the operator, as stated before, is restricted and is usually confined to the selection of the phase system. Preliminary experiments must be carried out to identify the best phase system to be used for the particular analysis under consideration. The best phase system will be that which provides the greatest separation ratio for the critical pair of solutes and, at the same time, ensures a minimum value for the capacity factor of the last eluted solute. Unfortunately, at this time, theories that predict the optimum solvent system that will effect a particular separation are largely empirical and those that are available can be very approximate, to say the least. Nevertheless, there are commercially available experimental routines that help in the selection of the best phase system for LC analyses, the results from which can be evaluated by supporting computer software. The program may then suggest further routines based on the initial results and, by an iterative procedure, eventually provides an optimum phase system as defined by the computer software. [Pg.364]

It is a common experience in synthetic chemistry that a truly optimal ordering of a synthetic route may not be possible in the planning stage, but may have to determined experimentally. The precise information necessary for the complete and unambiguous evaluation of each step in a possible synthesis is hardly ever available. Nonetheless it is clearly wise to try to optimize a synthetic plan on the basis of available information before the experimental approach begins. Such an effort may suggest certain preliminary or "model" experiments that can be helpful in the choice or refinement of a synthetic plan. It is also obviously desirable to devise and consider alternate or bypass paths for each problematic step of a synthetic sequence. [Pg.79]

Preliminary Cytotoxicity Testing. An essential first step is to carry out a preliminary study to evaluate the toxicity of the test material to the indicator cells, under the conditions of the main mutagenicity test. When selecting dose levels, the solubility of the test compound, the resulting pH of the media, and the osmolality of the test solutions all need to be considered. The latter two parameters have been known to induce false positive effects in in vitro mammalian tests (Brusick, 1986). The experimental procedure is carried out as follows. [Pg.207]

The same approach is employed to describe shear-induced transport of soot particles. Based on limited amount of experimental information for such phenomena in the literature we have established a flow cell where soot entrainment from the surface of preloaded filters from the engine exhaust can be studied. Preliminary experiments at ambient conditions reveal that no soot entrainment is observed up to relevant shear rates at the entrance of DPFs. We attribute this to the moisture content in ambient conditions of the soot deposits that due to capillary condensation increases adhesive forces between the particles. In the future experiments at high temperatures are planned to evaluate experimentally the shear-entrained fluxes for soot and ash deposits. [Pg.250]

Suppose a polydisperse system is investigated experimentally by measuring the number of particles in a set of different classes of diameter or molecular weight. Suppose further that these data are believed to follow a normal distribution function. To test this hypothesis rigorously, the chi-squared test from statistics should be applied. A simple graphical examination of the hypothesis can be conducted by plotting the cumulative distribution data on probability paper as a rapid, preliminary way to evaluate whether the data conform to the requirements of the normal distribution. [Pg.635]

A preliminary and essential step in a QSAR study is to evaluate the database to identify any outliers and hidden patterns, trends, and major groupings. Outliers refer to certain members of the database exhibiting mechanistic behaviors so different that the outlier cannot belong to the bulk of the data. Selecting suitable molecular descriptors, whether they are theoretical or empirical or are derived from readily available experimental characteristics of the structures, is an important step in the development of sound QSAR models. Many descriptors reflect simple molecular properties and thus can provide insight into the physicochemical nature of the activity or property under consideration. [Pg.139]
