Pregnancy antiemetics

Dimenhydrinate is an antiemetic especially usehil as an antinauseant in motion sickness, and for syndromes associated with vertigo such as Meniere s syndrome, radiation sickness, and vestibular dysfunction. It may produce mild drowsiness. It is FDA Category B for Pregnancy, and is available as an OTC preparation as well as by prescription. 

Hypnosis maybe effective for severe NVP.11 Psychotherapy is another non-invasive treatment approach that is safe during pregnancy or in situations in which adverse treatment effects and drug interactions are a concern. One small study suggested that patients with hyperemesis gravidarum may benefit from the combination of psychotherapy and antiemetics. 

Pregnancy vomiting is prone to occur in the first trimester thus pharmacotherapy would coincide with the period of maximal fetal vulnerability to chemical injury. Accordingly, antiemetics (antihistamines, or neuroleptics if required) should be used only when continuous vomiting threatens to disturb electrolyte and water balance to a degree that places the fetus at risk.

Other adverse effects include headache, dizziness, breast tenderness, and abdominal and leg cramps. 

Roman chamomile is stated to have carminative, antiemetic, antispasmodic, and sedative properties. It has been used for dyspepsia, nausea and vomiting, anorexia, vomiting during pregnancy, dysmenorrhea, and specifically for flatulent dyspepsia associated with mental stress.

Burley argues that there is no evidence that thalidomide was neither useful nor prescribed as an antiemetic, and thus it had no place in the management of the nausea of pregnancy. 

The antiemetic and antivertigo dru are contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to these dru, diose in a coma, or those with severe central nervous system (CNS) depression. In general, these dni are not recommended during pregnancy, lactation, or for uncomplicated vomiting in young children. Metoclopramide is contraindicated in patients with a seizure disorder, breast cancer, pheochromocytoma, or gastrointestinal obstruction. Prochlorperazine is contraindicated in patients with bone marrow depression, blood dyscrasia, Fbrkinson s... 

Antihistaminics are widely used in the palliative treatment in allergic conditions like hay fever, urticaria, some forms of pruritus, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, nasal discharge, mild asthma etc. A few antihistaminics possess potent antiemetic action and hence are frequently employed in the prevention and treatment of irradiation sickness, motion sickness (air, sea, road), nausea in pregnancy and postoperative vomiting. 

It is mainly used as an antiemetic in the prevention and treatment of motion sickness. It may also he used in post-operative vomiting, the nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, drug-induced nausea and vomiting and in irradiation sickness.
