The second application of the CFTI approach described here involves calculations of the free energy differences between conformers of the linear form of the opioid pentapeptide DPDPE in aqueous solution [9, 10]. DPDPE (Tyr-D-Pen-Gly-Phe-D-Pen, where D-Pen is the D isomer of /3,/3-dimethylcysteine) and other opioids are an interesting class of biologically active peptides which exhibit a strong correlation between conformation and affinity and selectivity for different receptors. The cyclic form of DPDPE contains a disulfide bond constraint, and is a highly specific S opioid [llj. Normal-phase HPLC on silica columns are also used extensively in D3 analysis of vitamin products with nonpolar mobile phase containing polar modifiers. Krol et al. (66) separated D3 from pre-D3 and from a mixture of other vitamins using an adsorptive silica support introduced in 1972 (Vydac , supplied at that time by Applied Science Laboratories, Inc. State College, Penn.). The hand-packed column was used in conjunction with a mobile phase of pen-tane tetrahydrofuran (97.5 2.5). Sterule (32) used aluminum oxide as column support with chloroform as the mobile phase. Separation of D3 and its isomers and from vitamin A acetate was achieved. 

This is an extension of the Allen and Svarovsky [13] x-ray gravitational sedimentometer. The x-rays are generated by an isotope source and, after passing through the suspension, they are detected by a scintillation counter. The signal from the counter passes to a pre-amplifier, and thence to a ratemeter, and a trace is recorded by a pen recorder. 

Reactions involving mackinawite and an oxidized sulfur species have been repeatedly shown to lead to pyrite formation (e.g., Bemer, 1969 Rickard, 1969, 1975). In addition, Wilkin and Bames (1996) and Penning et al. (2000) have shown that pyrite formation is exceptionally rapid when the mackinawite is pre-oxidized (e.g., exposed briefly to air) prior to the experiment. Based partly on X-ray photoelectron and Auger spectroscopy results of pyrrhotite oxidation (Mycroft et al., 1995), Wilkin and Bames (1996) hypothesized that this oxidative exposure initiates an iron-loss pathway similar to Equation (13). In sulfidic solutions, Fe(II) oxyhydroxides, shown as a product in this reaction, would not accumulate, but instead would undergo reductive dissolution by a reaction similar to Equation (14) ... 

When you contact a prescriber, introduce yourself, identify the patient and describe your concern (always have a pen and paper with you so that you can jot down information you want to give and any information you receive from the prescriber). The prescriber may suggest a plan of action or may expect you to have already formulated a plan which you could share and modify if necessary. Together you should reach a conclusion and then you need to confirm that you have understood the pre-scriber s intentions correctly, summarise what you have heard and repeat the information back to the prescriber for confirmation the strength, dosage and frequency of the medication are particularly important. 

The system represents a major development in the sending of and responding to pre-export notifications. As the timely submission of pre-export notifications and the provision of the necessary feedback to the exporting country are crucial to prevent diversions of precursors from international trade, the Board encourages all Governments to utilize the new PEN Online system. This is of the utmost importance as, considering the number of notifications provided on a daily basis, the current mode of communication of preexport notifications by facsimile and conventional mail will ultimately be replaced by this faster and more effective system. 

Pre-export notifications remain the cornerstone of the system of monitoring international trade. Therefore, the Board encourages all Governments to utilize the new PEN Online system for the quick and more efficient exchange of data.
