193 PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS AND LIMITATIONS FOR COUPLED BIO-ELECTRO PROCESSES 

In the previous sections, the promising potential for coupled bio-electro processes was shown. This paragraph wants to emphasize some points that have to be considered for the most efficient application of coupled bio-electro processes. 

Not only do these reactions reduce the efficiency of hydrogen and oxygen production, but electrolysis products such as chlorine can also have detrimental effects on degrading microorganisms, which is demonstrated in the following paragraph.

Consequently, considerations about the microbial activity are especially important for applications in which electrochemical processes are applied in combination with microbial processes without shielding the electrolysis products from the microorganisms. A shielding is recommended for applications involving electrokinetics as for these processes, the generated electric field is important and not the electrogenerated electrode products.
