Powells method

Direction set (Powell s) methods belong to a class of local optimisation methods in multidimensions. The starting point x(p, . p ) in n-dimen-sional space is evolved in some vector direction v so that the function F(x) is minimised along the line v. The method proceeds as follows  [Pg.342]

Methods which do not employ gradients are diversified, between the most primitive ones, which use a trial-and-error approach to the best solution among a finite set g(1)...g(n), and sophisticated procedures such as the Powell method. (69)... [Pg.265]

There are many different types of search routines used to locate optimum operating conditions. One approach is to make a large number of runs at different combinations of temperature, reaction time, hydrogen partial pressure, and catalyst amount, and then run a multivariable computer search routine (like the Hooke-Jeeves method or Powell method). A second approach is to formulate a mathematical model from the experimental results and then use an analytical search method to locate the optimum. The formulation of a mathematical model is not an easy task, and in many cases, this is the most critical step. Sometimes it is impossible to formulate a mathematical model for the system, as in the case of the system studied here, and an experimental search must be performed. [Pg.196]

There are two basic types of unconstrained optimization algorithms (1) those requiring function derivatives and (2) those that do not. Here we give only an overview and refer the reader to Sec. 3 or the references for more details. The nonderivative methods are of interest in optimization applications because these methods can be readily adapted to the case in which experiments are carried out directly on the process. In such cases, an actual process measurement (such as yield) can be the objective function, and no mathematical model for the process is required. Methods that do not require derivatives are called direct methods and include sequential simplex (Nelder-Meade) and Powells method. The sequential simplex method is quite satisfactory for optimization with two or three independent variables, is simple to understand, and is fairly easy to execute. Powell s method is more efficient than the simplex method and is based on the concept of conjugate search directions. This class of methods can be used in special cases but is not recommended for optimization involving more than 6 to 10 variables. [Pg.34]

It is widely believed that, generally speaking, methods such as the Davidon-Fletcher-Powell method are superior to the Fletcher-Reeves method and, indeed, Fletcher suggests (see p. 82 of ref. 8) that typically the Fletcher-Reeves method will take about twice as many iterations as the Davidon-Fletcher-Powell method. [Pg.57]

Side chain conformations were minimized by 600 cycles of conjugate gradient minimization (Powell method) and saved. We observed that 600 cycles of minimization allows convergence in a reasonable time. [Pg.758]

The computational effort in evaluating the Hessian matrix is significant, and quasi-Newton approximations have been used to reduce this effort. The Wilson-Han-Powell method is an enhancement to successive quadratic programming where the Hessian matrix, (q. ), is replaced by a quasi-Newton update formula such as the BEGS algorithm. Consequently, only first partial derivative information is required, and this is obtained from finite difference approximations of the Lagrangian function. [Pg.2447]

This rank two correction has no numerical problems with small denominators, and it can be shown that is always positive definite if H is. This guarantees that d will always be a descent direction, thus overcoming one of the serious difficulties of the pure Newton method. The Davidon-Fletcher-Powell method works quite well, but it turns out that the slight modification below gives experimentally better results, even though it is theoretically equivalent. [Pg.192]

In the simplest version, the Powell method utilises the unit vectors as a set of directions. Using one-dimensional minimisation, the algorithm moves along the first direction to its minimum, then from there along the second direction to its minimum, etc. The whole process is repeated as many times as necessary until the function stops decreasing. All the direction set methods consist of prescriptions for updating the set of directions as the method proceeds. [Pg.343]

I is the identity matrix. The six first derivatives of the energy with respect to the strain components e, measure the forces acting on the unit cell. When combined with the atomic coordinates we get a matrix with 3N - - 6 dimensions. At a minimum not only should there be no force on any of the atoms but the forces on the unit cell should also be zero. Application of a standard iterative minimisation procedure such as the Davidon-Fletcher-Powell method will optimise all these degrees of freedom to give a strain-free final structure. In such procedures a reasonably accurate estimate of the initial inverse Hessian matrix is usually required to ensure that the changes in the atomic positions and in the cell dimensions are matched. [Pg.296]

For an iV-dimensional surface, 2iV + 4 -i- m(N + 3) steps are required, where m is the number of passes through step 7. (typically two or three). A test of the goodness of an individual structure requires iV + 1 energy computations to evaluate the first derivative numerically. As N increases, the modified Fletcher-Powell method is significantly more efficient than the axial iteration... [Pg.261]

Roughly, about 250 data points are required to fit the generalized hyperbolic distributions. However, about 100 data points can offer reasonable results. Although maximum-likelihood estimation method can be used to estimate the parameters, it is very difficult to solve such a complicated nonlinear equation system with five equations and five unknown parameters. Therefore, numerical algorithms are suggested such as modified Powell method (Wang, 2005). Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistics can also be used here for the fitness test. [Pg.397]
