Potential relevance

The current prototype code, is included because of being knowledge-based and its potential relevance for chemical releases. Presently, it calculates doses and consequences to facility workers from accidental releases of radioactive material. This calculation includes specifying material at risk and worker evacuation schemes, and calculating airborne release, flows between rooms, filtration, deposition, concentrations of released materials at various locations and worker exposures.

The considerably higher effort of carrying out LCAs would be worthwhile in two situations. First, individual LCAs may be valuable in cases where complex and potentially relevant trade-offs occur in mass balancing which cannot be resolved by expert judgement. Second, the routine use of LCA could be aimed for. This would necessitate a dedicated effort to compile inventory data for frequently used processes, such as waste treatment. The lesson to be taken from this report by Paik et al. [2004] is that a Pt catalyst in contact with a hydrous electrolyte is so active in forming chemisorbed oxygen at temp-eramres and potentials relevant to an operating PEFC, that the description of the cathode catalyst surface as Pt, implying Pt metal, is seriously flawed. Indeed, that a Reaction (1.4) acmally takes place at a Pt catalyst surface, exposes, Pt to be less noble than usually considered (although it remains a precious metal nevertheless. ..). Such a surface oxidation process, taking place on exposure to O2 and water and driven by electronically shorted ORR cathode site and metal anode site, is ordinarily associated with surface oxidation (and corrosion) of the less noble metals.

Although most expert systems are designed to advise fairly unsophisticated users, some act instead as assistants to established human experts DENDRAL, which we introduce shortly, falls in this category. The starting point for any study of this kind is a set of elementary reactions and their associated reaction-rate parameters.
