Human serum albumin was the first full-length human protein to be expressed in the leaves of a transgenic plant (both tobacco and potato leaves were shown to express the protein). This report was published in 1990 [18]. Four years earlier, Barta and colleagues had demonstrated the expression of human growth hormone in tobacco and sunflower callus, and the protein was expressed as a fusion with the Agrohacterium tumefaciens nopaline synthase enzyme [17]. [Pg.194]

The activities of 4 ecdysteroids (20E 1-1, E 2-1, polB 2-6 and poststerone 2-11 ) have been compared after spraying on to the food (potato leaves) of the Colorado beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata [182], Surprisingly, poststerone gave a high level of toxicity. [Pg.29]

Synthetic spider silk has also been produced in transgenic tobacco and potato expressing the endogenous silk protein genes of the spider Nephila davipes [147]. Proteins of up to 100 kDa in size, and with 90% identity to silk protein, were produced in tobacco leaves, potato leaves and potato tubers at up to 2% of the total soluble protein accumulation level [151]. [Pg.871]

Gudkova (1969) investigated the effect of copper-containing preparations on carbohydrate metabolism in potato leaves and tubers. In the leaves the quantity of monosaccharides did not change immediately after treatment, but increased after ten days. This increase continued during the whole period of development. Simultaneously, the quantity of disaccharides decreased. In the tubers, the quantity of soluble carbohydrates was considerably higher that in the controls. On the other hand, the starch content was sharply reduced. [Pg.274]
