Potassium permanganate aqueous

Unlike simple alkenes, CS has a rather rapid rate of hydrolysis (fi/2 =15 min at 25°C), and this is accelerated by the use of dilute, aqueous sodium hydroxide (Brooks et al., 1976). Potassium permanganate (aqueous) oxidizes CS and similar a,(3-unsaturated dinitriles to the corresponding benzoic acids. [Pg.42]

In what way does a solution of hydrogen peroxide react with (a) chlorine water, (b) potassium permanganate solution, (c) potassium dichromate solution, (d) hydrogen sulphide 50 cm of an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide were treated with an excess of potassium iodide and dilute sulphuric acid the liberated iodine was titrated with 0.1 M sodium thiosulphate solution and 20.0 cm were required. Calculate the concentration of the hydrogen peroxide solution in g 1" ... [Pg.309]

When titanium dissolves in dilute hydrochloric acid, a violet solution containing titanium(III) ions is formed. This solution rapidly decolorises acidified aqueous potassium permanganate at room temperature. Titanium(IV) chloride is a colourless covalent liquid completely hydrolysed by water. Titanium(III) chloride forms hydrated titanium(III) ions in water and disproportionates when heated in a vacuum. [Pg.424]

Peroxides can usually be completely removed from a sample of ether by thorough shaking with aqueous potassium permanganate solution. [Pg.83]

Reduction of potassium permanganate. To a solution of uric acid in aqueous NajCO add KMnO solution drop by drop a brown precipitate of MnOj is produced immediately in the cold. [Pg.390]

Ketones are oxidized by potassium permanganate or by sodium hypochlorite (91) in aqueous solution to the corresponding acids. For example, oxidation of 5-acetylthiazole with aqueous KMnO at 70°C gives 5-thia-zolecarboxylic acid. [Pg.537]

Sahcylaldehyde is readily oxidized, however, to sahcyhc acid by reaction with solutions of potassium permanganate, or aqueous silver oxide suspension. 4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde can be oxidized to 4-hydroxybenzoic acid with aqueous silver nitrate (44). Organic peracids, in basic organic solvents, can also be used for these transformations into benzoic acids (45). Another type of oxidation is the reaction of sahcylaldehyde with alkaline potassium persulfate, which yields 2,5-dihydroxybenzaldehyde (46). [Pg.505]

Sulfur dioxide concentrations as low as 40 mg/m in air have been determined bypassing air samples through an aqueous solution of tetrachloromercurate, which converts SO2 to the dichlorosulfitomercurate complex. Oxidation of the complex by potassium permanganate is chemiluminescent and the intensity, as measured by a photomultipHer, is proportional to sulfur dioxide concentration (312). [Pg.276]

Aqueous potassium permanganate solutions are not perfectiy thermodynamically stable at 25°C, because Mn02, not MnO is the thermodynamically stable form of manganese in water. Thus permanganate tends to oxidize water with the evolution of oxygen and the deposition of manganese dioxide, which acts to further catalyze the reaction. [Pg.516]

The density of the alkaU metal permanganate salts increases with the atomic number of the Group 1 (IA) cation, whereas the corresponding aqueous solubihty decreases (106). At room temperature aqueous solubiUty decreases from about 900 g/L for NaMnO to 60 g/L for KMnO, and to 2.5 g/L for CsMnO. The solubihty of potassium permanganate in water as a function of temperature is as follows ... [Pg.516]

The solubihty of potassium permanganate in aqueous potassium hydroxide (108) is shown in Figure 7. Permanganates are soluble in certain nonaqueous solvents such as hquid NH, but not in hquid SO2. Organic solvents such as glacial acetic acid, acetone, acetonitrile, tert-huty alcohol. [Pg.516]

Vinyl chloride can be completely oxidized to CO2 and HCl using potassium permanganate [7722-64-7] in an aqueous solution at pH 10. This reaction can be used for wastewater purification, as can ozonolysis, peroxide oxidation, and uv irradiation (42). The aqueous phase oxidation of vinyl chloride with chlorine yields chloroacetaldehyde (43). [Pg.414]
