Porosity and cracking

W a = air inleakage resulting from metal porosity and cracks along weld lines, Ib/hr... [Pg.368]

The so-called green petroleum coke produced by delayed coking still contains volatile components, which escape at high temperatures, leading to excessive porosity and cracking. In addition form stability cannot be ensured. To avoid this it is first subjected to calcination in gas fired rotary kilns or rotary hearth kilns at 1300 to 1400°C. This is also necessary with anthracite, which can be calcined at even higher temperatures. [Pg.507]

As cracking proceeds the load is carried by a smaller area. Additionally, even in an uncracked state, the load carried by boundaries is magnified due to porosity in the material. The relationship between porosity P and mean boundary traction is not simple, as it will depend on the morphology of the pores. Thus, (r)will depend on porosity and crack density in the form... [Pg.133]

Air can leak into a system around flanged joints, valve stems, pump and agitator shaft seals, instrument connections, and the like. Leakage can also occur through metal porosities and cracks along weld seams. Air leakage is unavoidable in commercial systems. [Pg.242]

Weldability of the material important and combines many of the basic properties that govern the ease with which a material can be welded and the quality of the finished weid, i.e. porosity and cracking. Material composition (alloying elements, grain structure and impurities) and physical properties (thermal conductivity, specific heat and thermal expansion) are some important attributes which determine weldability. [Pg.192]

Here a - surface tension pa - atmospheric pressure 9 - contact angle of crack s wall wetting by penetrant n - coefficient, characterizing residual filling of defect s hollow by a penetrant before developer s application IT and h - porosity and thickness of developer s layer respectively W - minimum width of crack s indication, which can be registered visually or with the use of special optical system. The peculiarity of the case Re < H is that the whole penetrant volume is extracted by a developer. As a result the whole penetrant s volume, which was trapped during the stage of penetrant application, imbibes developer s layer and forms an indication of a defect. [Pg.614]

Decorative chromium plating, 0.2—0.5 ]lni deposit thickness, is widely used for automobile body parts, appHances, plumbing fixtures, and many other products. It is customarily appHed over a nonferrous base in the plating of steel plates. To obtain the necessary corrosion resistance, the nature of the undercoat and the porosity and stresses of the chromium are all carefliUy controlled. Thus microcracked, microporous, crack-free, or conventional chromium may be plated over duplex and triplex nickel undercoats. [Pg.143]

Sulphuric acid is used to a very large extent for pickling low-alloy steels. The rate at which it removes the scale depends on (q) the porosity and number of cracks in the scale, (b) the relative amounts of wiistite, decomposed wiistite, magnetite and haematite in the scale, and (c) factors affecting the activity of the pickle. [Pg.292]

On the other hand, the addition of fibers may cause undesired properties of the cement [1759]. Fibers can actually increase pore and fracture systems in latex cements. The amount of fibers in a fiber seal cement influences the porosity and permeability while affecting compressive strength. During acid treatment of the formation, the fibers in the cement can be easily dislodged and extracted from the cracks, leaving pore spaces behind. [Pg.134]

For n-decane isomerization, when a good balance between the metal phase and the acidic phase of the catalysts is reached, the isomerization and cracking yield curves of the catalysts are a unique function of the conversion, meaning that these yields do not depends on the porosity nor the acidity of large pore materials. Formation of the most bulky isomers, such as 4-propylheptane and 3-ethyl-3-methylheptane was favored in mesoporous solids (figure 1). Criteria based on the formation of these particular isomers are linked with mesoporosity and could be useful to discriminate between zeolites catalysts with and without mesopores. [Pg.218]

The purpose of the present work is to incorporate aluminum into the framework of SBA-15 during the synthesis in order to create acid sites on the surface of the material directly and to enhance its activity in acid-catalyzed reactions and to study the stability of SBA and AlSBA molecular sieves under various treatments. The influence of these treatments on the pore size, wall thickness and the environment of Al in these materials are investigated in detail. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Electron Microscopy (TEM) and N2 adsorption were used to characterize the structure, the porosity and the stability of these materials. 27Al MAS NMR was used to ascertain the nature and environment of Al, cumene cracking to test the catalytic activity of parent materials and ammonia chemisorption to probe their surface acidity. [Pg.210]
