Nanoscale pore

Many other opportunities exist due to the enormous flexibility of the preparative method, and the ability to incorporate many different species. Very recently, a great deal of work has been published concerning methods of producing these materials with specific physical forms, such as spheres, discs and fibres. Such possibilities will pave the way to new application areas such as molecular wires, where the silica fibre acts as an insulator, and the inside of the pore is filled with a metal or indeed a conducting polymer, such that nanoscale wires and electronic devices can be fabricated. Initial work on the production of highly porous electrodes has already been successfully carried out, and the extension to uni-directional bundles of wires will no doubt soon follow. [Pg.73]

Control over the material s shape at the nanoscale enables further control over reactants access to the dopant, and ultimately affords a potent means of controlling function which is analogous to that parsimoniously employed by Nature to synthesize materials with myriad function with a surprisingly low number of material s building blocks. A nice illustration is offered by the extrusion catalytic polymerization of ethylene within the hexagonal channels of MCM-41 mesoporous silica doped with catalyst titanocene.36 The structure is made of amorphous silica walls spatially arranged into periodic arrays with high surface area (up to 1400 m2g 1) and mesopore volume >0.7 mLg-1. In this case, restricted conformation dictates polymerization the pore diameter... [Pg.38]

Improvements based on Bellcore technology were reported recently by Wunder and co-workers. Using PEG oligomers instead of DBP, they obtained the PVdF—HFP microporous films with the pore size increased from nanoscale to microscale, as shown in... [Pg.170]

For the detailed study of reaction-transport interactions in the porous catalytic layer, the spatially 3D model computer-reconstructed washcoat section can be employed (Koci et al., 2006, 2007a). The structure of porous catalyst support is controlled in the course of washcoat preparation on two levels (i) the level of macropores, influenced by mixing of wet supporting material particles with different sizes followed by specific thermal treatment and (ii) the level of meso-/ micropores, determined by the internal nanostructure of the used materials (e.g. alumina, zeolites) and sizes of noble metal crystallites. Information about the porous structure (pore size distribution, typical sizes of particles, etc.) on the micro- and nanoscale levels can be obtained from scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy ( ), or other high-resolution imaging techniques in combination with mercury porosimetry and BET adsorption isotherm data. This information can be used in computer reconstruction of porous catalytic medium. In the reconstructed catalyst, transport (diffusion, permeation, heat conduction) and combined reaction-transport processes can be simulated on detailed level (Kosek et al., 2005). [Pg.121]
