Polyurethanes aromatic polyether-based

Two thermoplastic elastomers (Bayer s Texin DP7-1049 and 990) were used for this work. Both materials were aromatic polyether-based thermoplastic polyurethane with similar melt viscosities and Shore hardness valnes of 45D and A90, respectively [19]. [Pg.2941]

In order to demonstrate the use of laser flash photolysis in elucidation of the MDI based polyurethane photolysis mechanism, three polyurethanes, two aryl biscarbamate models, an aryl monocarbamate model, and an aromatic amine were selected. Two of the polyurethanes are based on MDI while the third is based on TDI (mixture of 2,4 and 2,6 isomers in 80/20 ratio). The MDI based polyurethanes all have the same basic carbamate repeat unit. The MDI elastomer (MDI-PUE) is soluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The simple polyurethane (MDI-PU) based on MDI and 1,4-butanediol is used in the tert-butoxy abstraction reactions since it does not contain a polyether backbone. Thermoset polyurethanes are cross-linked polymers, which are produced by casting or reaction injection molding (RIM). For cast elastomers, TDI in combination with 3,3,-dichloro-4,4,-diphen5lmethanediamine (MOCA) are often used. In the RIM technology, aromatic diamine chain extenders, such as diethyltoluenediamine (DETDA), are used to produce poly(urethane ureas) (47), and replacement of the polyether polyols with amine-terminated polyols produces polyureas (48). The aromatic diamines are soluble in the polyol and provide fast reaction rates. In 1985, internal mold release agents based on zinc stearate compatibilized with primary amines were introduced to the RIM process to minimize mold preparation and scrap from parts tom at demold. Lights stability of polyurethanes depends to a large extent on their chemical structure, and both components (Le., isocyanate and polyol) have an influence. Polyurethanes based on aliphatic isocyanates and polyester diols show the best light stability if yellowing is considered, whereas polyurethanes based on aromatic isocyanates and polyether diols are worst in this respect. [Pg.124]

Polyurethane ether (PUR-ether) foams are thought to degrade primarily by oxidation, particularly in the presence of light, resulting in discolouration and a loss of mechanical properties. Polyurethanes synthesized from a polyether polyol and an aromatic diisocyanate such as diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) are highly vulnerable to photo-oxidation, whereas polyester-based polyurethanes are more resistant to ultraviolet radiation (Kerr and Batcheller, 1993).
