Ozonc-rcsjstant elastomers which have no unsaturation are an exceUent choice when their physical properties suit the appHcation, for example, polyacrylates, polysulfides, siHcones, polyesters, and chlorosulfonated polyethylene (38). Such polymers are also used where high ozone concentrations are encountered. Elastomers with pendant, but not backbone, unsaturation are likewise ozone-resistant. Elastomers of this type are the ethylene—propylene—diene (EPDM) mbbers, which possess a weathering resistance that is not dependent on environmentally sensitive stabilizers. Other elastomers, such as butyl mbber (HR) with low double-bond content, are fairly resistant to ozone. As unsaturation increases, ozone resistance decreases. Chloroprene mbber (CR) is also quite ozone-resistant. [Pg.238]

Many curing systems bring about aHquid—to—soHd conversion of the polysulfide polymers. Most curing agents produce an initial soHd mass characterized by a high degree of plasticity and poor elasticity. The development of elastic properties is so slow that the materials are not suitable for the accurate reproduction of undercut areas found ia oral stmctures. [Pg.492]

To improve the rheological properties and extend the very short working time, a simple polyester is kicluded as thinner. Mixing is easy, and dimensional change ki ak is less than 0.1% over several hours. Elastic recovery and reproduction of detail are exceUent. Polysulfides. The polysulftde elastomer, best known under the trade name Thiokol, represents the earliest commercially developed synthetic mbber, developed ia 1930 by J. C. Patrick as a highly solvent and age-resistant elastomer (15). A composite containing 15% treated mbber particles per 85% polyurethane has physical properties similar to those of the pure polyurethane. Inclusion of surface-modified waste mbber in polyurethane matrix increases the coefficient of friction. This finds application in polyurethane tires and shoe soles. The treated mbber particles enhance the flexibility and impact resistance of polyester-based constmction materials [95]. Inclusion of treated waste mbber along with carboxyl terminated nitrile mbber (CTBN) in epoxy formulations increases the fracture toughness of the epoxy resins [96]. [Pg.1055]
