System B. Water-butanol -i- dodecane 1 1 (by weight)-polyoxyethylene [10] oleyl alcohol [hereafter designated as Ci8 i(EO)io or Brij 97]. This system was investigated along the water dilution line for which the surfactant/alcohol/... [Pg.76]

Recently, polyoxyethylene oleyl ethers were made of high-purity oleyl alcohol (99.7%) synthesized from high-purity oleic acid [3]. In this paper, the effect of hydrophilic chain length on the phase behavior and the structures of liquid crystals in polyoxyethylene oleyl ether/water system were investigated by means of phase study and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). [Pg.60]

Polyoxyethylene oleyl ethers, POE(5), POE(IO) and POE(20) were kindly supplied by NOF CO., LTD. POE(5), POE(IO), and POE(20) were synthesized from high-purity oleyl alcohol (99.7%). The mean number of oxyethylene unit, which was determined by analyzing end hydroxyl group [4], are 5.1 for POE(5), 10.7 for POE(IO) and 19.2 for POE(20), respectively. The trace of oleyl alcohol was detected by high-performance liquid chromatography, but the distribution of number of oxyethylene unit(n) in POE(n) is narrow. Doubly distilled water was used. [Pg.60]

The lipophilic group of polyoxyethylene oleyl ethers (POEs) used in the present study is almost pure oleyl group because POEs were synthesized from high-purity oleyl alcohol (99.7%). On the other hand, their oxyethyl-ene chains have distribution. If a system contains a large amount of oil, one has to consider the effect of the hydrophilic-chain distribution on the phase behavior, because the solubility of each surfactant of the mixture in oil is largely different [5]. However, critical micelle concentrations of POEs are considered to be very low [6], the effect of the distribution of the hydrophilic chains on the phase behavior may be small except in a very dilute region. [Pg.61]

The influence of the hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) of the non-ionic surfactant on the phase behaviour has recently been studied [34-37] with the aim of better understanding the mechanisms of emulsion and suspension stabilization. Ternary phase diagrams for dodecane, water and mixtures of Brij 92, and Brij 96 (polyoxyethylated oleyl alcohol derivatives with oxyethylene chain lengths of 2 and 10, respectively), with a range of HLB values, are shown in Fig. 2.19. The areas of the L2 and the inverse middle phase M2 (an interesting feature of these systems not usually observed in polyoxyethylene non-ionic systems) increase as the HLB increases, reaching a maximum at HLB 8. Maximum water uptake in the L2 phase in 25 %, 40 % and 50 % surfactant solutions in oil as a function of HLB is... [Pg.59]

The polyoxyethylene alkyl ethers are a series of polyoxyethylene glycol ethers of n-alcohols (lauryl, oleyl, myristyl, cetyl, and stearyl alcohol). Of the large number of different materials commercially available, four types are listed in the USPNF 23, one type in the JP 2001, and four types in the PhEur 2005. To a flask with a condenser is added 492 gm of water and 20 gm of poly(vinyl alcohol) (100%). The mixture is stirred until the poly(vinyl alcohol) dissolves. Then 6 gm of Nonion E230 [polyoxyethylene (30) oleyl ether from Nippon Oils Fats Co., Ltd.] and 2.0 gm of calcium carbonate are added and stirred in order to dissolve them and then the solution purged with nitrogen for 5 min. The flask is heated to 65 C, and 40 gm of vinyl acetate and 40 gm of 2.5% potassium persulfate are added. The temperature is raised to 75 1°C, and the reaction allowed to proceed for 1 hr. Then 270 gm of vinyl acetate and 30 gm of 2.5% potassium persulfate (aqueous solution) are added to the flask separately (using two dropping funnels) over a 3-hr period at 75° 1°C. A solution of 70 gm vinyl acetate and 20 gm glycidyl methacrylate is then added dr op wise while 11 parts 2.5%... [Pg.105]
