Polymerization reactions, mechanism

The reaction mechanisms of this extraordinary solid state reaction has strongly attracted the interest of the polymer chemists from the very beginning. Valuable information on several aspects of the thermal polymerization reaction mechanisms, have been obtained from X-ray structural and physico-chemical investigations, discussed by Wegner Baughman and Chance . However, the identifi-... [Pg.55]

In all experiments described in this work only extremely low concentrations of intermediates are considered. This is due to our interest which is primarily focussed on the most important initial steps of the polymerization reaction, which are characteristic of the overall polymerization reaction mechanism. Consequently only low final polymer conversion is exp>ected and, therefore, complications arising from the interaction between the intermediate oligomer states can be neglected. It will be shown that the low temperature conventional optical absorption and ESR spectroscopy are powerful spectroscopic methods which yield a wealth of information concerning structural and dynamical aspects of the intermediate states in the photopolymerization reaction of diacetylene crystals. Therefore, this contribution will center on the photochemical and photophysical primary and secondary processes of this... [Pg.56]

A solvent dependence of the activity was demonstrated earlier,(refs. 3-10 and was also observed in the present study. This may be due to catalyst solubility. The butene concentration as a function of time closely followed the general empirical relationship ln(monomer)t A exp(-Bt) + C. We ascribe no mechanistic interpretation to this observation, but note, however, that similar formulae have been derived from models of olefin polymerization reaction mechanisms. [Pg.425]

In the case of bulk polymerizations, reaction mechanism seems to depend on the nature of the initiator. Thus, the same research group reports that with respect to the monoperoxide of tributylborane as the initiator, the bulk polymerization is of the 0.61st order with an activation energy of 10.1 kcal/mole [13]. With diisopropyl peroxydicarbonate, while the reaction order was of the 0.58th order with respect to the initiator, the overall activation energy of the bulk polymerization was 16.9 kcal/mole [38]. The conversion with the latter initiator was as high as 90% at a reaction temperature of 40 C [38]. [Pg.338]

The key stages in a chain polymerization reaction mechanism are demonstrated in radical polymerization processes [23,24] and a typical reaction scheme is outlined in Figure 1.5. [Pg.8]

This article is primarily concerned with chain copolymerization. Chain copol5nner-ization is important as it allows a wide array of functional molecules to he designed and incorporated into pol5mieric materials. In addition, fundamental studies on copolymerization allow the mapping out of monomer structure-reactivity relationships that imderpin our knowledge of polymerization reaction mechanisms. [Pg.1876]

Moreover, even though the complete molecular weight distribution for broad polymers may not be accurately recovered by MALDI-TOF alone, the very detailed molecular weight information provided for the lower molecular weight species is ideally suitable for the study of polymerization reaction mechanisms, chain end types, dendrimer analyses, and polymer identification (60-63,68). [Pg.3388]

Coatings of fabrics is important as it provides flexibility and mechanical strength to the otherwise powdery, unprocessable poly aniline. Undoubtedly, the in-situ grafting of conducting polyaniline onto substrates can be compared with coating of the electrode during polymerization as both these are solid-liquid interfacial reactions, and therefore the mechanism for the formation of polyaniline cannot differ drastically [302-5]. The polymerization reactions mechanism can be written as... [Pg.562]

One purpose of the present investigation was to obtain some additional information on structure-crystallinity relationships in this family of polymers by the preparation of stereoregular isotactic polyesters from a single asymmetric isomer of the chiral monomer that is, from an optically-active a,a-disubstituted-s-propiolactone. Because the polymerization reaction mechanism operates through scission of the alkyl-oxygen bond and does not involve bond reorganizations at the asymmetric center, it was fully expected that polymerization of the optically-active monomer... [Pg.210]

Methods for the detailed characterization of polymers will also be considered, as these are needed to study the principles of polymerization (reaction mechanisms, kinetics), as well as to establish and interpret structure-property relationships. [Pg.160]
