In the standard procedure the neutralised polymer is purified and hydrolysed and the hydrolysate is examined for ethanol. The absence of ethanol indicates that no tert.-oxonium ions containing a polymeric moiety and no polymeric oxycarbenium ions could have been present in the reaction mixture. 

In addition to the above thermodynamic consideration, kinetics also play an important role in determining the anodic stability of these salts. For example, some salts whose decomposition products are polymeric moieties were found to passivate the electrode surface effectively." Olefin metathesis (olefin disproportionation) is the reaction of two alkenes in which the redistribution of the olelinic bonds takes place with the aid of transition metal catalysts (Scheme 7.7). The reaction proceeds with an intermediate formation of a metallacyclobutene. This may either break down to provide two new olefins, or open up to generate a metal alkylidene species which -by multiple alkene insertion- may lead to formation of alkylidenes with a polymeric moiety [21]. Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) is the reaction of cyclic olefins in which backbone-unsaturated polymers are obtained. The driving force of this process is obviously in the relief of the ring strain of the monomers. 

Earlier Paukshtis and Davydov [7, 9] proposed this probe-molecule as a test for basic properties of oxide catalysts, but it has been noted that this molecule may be converted upon adsorption on strong surface sites (probably, Lewis acid sites) to other species or polymeric moieties.

The four-methylene chain analog of chiral polymer 137 and chiral polymer 139 were also tested in the asymmetric alkylation of iV-diphenylphosphonylbenzaldimines [119]. Contrary to aldehydes, both yield and enantioselectivity were lower with chiral polymer containing a spacer between the polymeric moiety and the catalytic part. Poly(aspartic acid) (PAA) is an ionic polymer that shows water solubility, which has been found to undergo lysosomal biodegradation. Due to the high functionality of the polymer, many block copolymers and chemically modified forms of PAA are synthesized with aspartic acid and other synthetic biodegradable polymeric moieties that form drug delivery vehicles with core-forming micellar nanostructures, and are currently xmder late stage clinical trials [39].

Segments can be interchanged between two polymer chains as, for example, in polyesters (reaction 7) where R, R2, R3 and R4 are polymeric moieties. Other examples are poly(dimethylsiloxanes), polyamides, polyesters and polyurethanes. 

In this manner, only the monomers capable of interacting with the benzofulvene molecules are included in the polymer. Moreover, selectivity has been shown also between polymerizing moieties present in the same monomer molecule as in the case of spontaneous polymerization of 6-AO-BF3k and 6-PO-BF3k.
