Another interesting applications area for fullerenes is based on materials that can be fabricated using fullerene-doped polymers. Polyvinylcarbazole (PVK) and other selected polymers, such as poly(paraphcnylene-vinylene) (PPV) and phenylmethylpolysilane (PMPS), doped with a mixture of Cgo and C70 have been reported to exhibit exceptionally good photoconductive properties [206, 207, 208] which may lead to the development of future polymeric photoconductive materials. Small concentrations of fullerenes (e.g., by weight) lead to charge transfer of the photo-excited electrons in the polymer to the fullerenes, thereby promoting the conduction of mobile holes in the polymer [209]. Fullerene-doped polymers also have significant potential for use in applications, such as photo-diodes, photo-voltaic devices and as photo-refractive materials. [Pg.85]

Laser patterning is another writing technique whereby a laser is used to directly expose or polymerize a material. A common application is stereolithography where a reservoir of UV-curable polymer is selectively exposed to a UV laser to fabricate complex three-dimensional (3D) structures in a layer-by-layer fashion. For each layer, the laser beam traces a cross section of the part on the surface of the UV-curable polymer. Exposure to UV laser solidifies the pattern traced on the resin and adheres it to the layer below. [Pg.441]

In addition to the particulate adsorbents listed in Table 16-5, some adsorbents are available in structured form for specific applications. Monoliths, papers, and paint formulations have been developed for zeolites, with these driven by the development of wheels (Fig. 16-60), adsorptive refrigeration, etc. Carbon monoliths are also available as are activated carbon fibers, created from polymeric materials, and sold in the forms of fabrics, mats, felts, and papers for use in various applications including in pleated form in filters. Zeolitic and carbon membranes are also available, with the latter developed for separation by selective surface flow [Rao and Sircar, J. Membrane Sci., 85, 253 (1993)]. [Pg.9]

In some applications, silver/silver chloride or calomel electrodes are considered cumbersome to use and maintain. More importantly, they are extremely difficult to miniaturize particularly with regard to their combined use with potentiometric membrane electrodes (see Section 18a.4.5.4) that have been fabricated into highly miniaturized and compact screen-printed sensor arrays for clinical use. Thus, several reference electrodes are manufactured with the same polymeric materials that are needed to design the responsive ion-selective membranes [7]. Fluorinated polyimides have achieved great importance as barrier materials during the last few years. Many experimental polyimides prepared from fluorine-containing monomers, mainly novel diamines, show an advantageous balance of permeability and selectivity for technical gases and vapours, which makes them very attractive for the fabrication of permselective membranes [119]. This is an application field showing very rapid expansion, where there exists a strong demand for new polymeric materials, and where soluble aromatic polyimides are considered as a real alternative [136-146]. [Pg.46]
