The activation barrier for the oligomerization of alkynes may be overcome thermally or catalytically. Because the classical thermal transformation of ethyne into benzene in a hot tube is rather ineffective (47), more emphasis has been placed on working out catalytic routes for the synthesis of linear oligomers, cyclooligomers, and polymers. Transition metal compounds have proved to act as effective catalysts in homogeneous as well as in heterogeneous processes (48). [Pg.141]

Figure 8-11 shows the proposed mechanism for isoselective propagation. Monomer coordinates at the vacant site of titanium, resulting in a four-center transition state and subsequent insertion of monomer into the polymer-transition metal bond. The insertion is referred to as migratory insertion since the polymer chain migrates from its original site to that occupied... [Pg.647]

We have recently reviewed the use of vibrational spectroscopy in supercritical fluids [2] and the theme common to most of our projects is the use of spectroscopy for real-time optimisation of processes in supercritical solution. Such optimisation is considerably more important in supercritical fluids than in conventional solvents because the tunability of the fluids results in a greater number of parameters which can affect the outcome of a reaction. Thus, the chances of hitting the optimal conditions purely by trial and error are much less in supercritical solution than in conventional reactions. Below, we give three examples of our approach, synthesis of polymers, transition metal hydrogen compounds, and the use of flow-reactors. [Pg.68]

The exploitation of active polymer-transition metal bonds for the synthesis of block copolymers (7,8) suggested a potentially viable approach. Specifically, we have attempted to use "living" polystyrene to alkylate Ti(0Bu>4 followed by acetylene polymerization, viz... [Pg.508]

Since the first discovery of fullerenes [110] and availability of synthetically useful amount of Cgg and higher fullerenes (C70, Cyg, Cyg, and Cg4) [111], much work has been done to investigate the physical properties and the reactivity of these stable molecules. The highly interesting electronic properties of fullerenes have lead to the possibility of using units of fullerenes in the formation of polymers. Transition metal-fullerene compounds are generally classified into two categories ... [Pg.385]

Electro-catalyst supports play a vital role in ascertaining the performance, durability, and cost of PEMFC and DMFC systems. A myriad of nano-structured materials including carbon nanostructures, metal oxides, conducting polymers, transition metals nitrides and carbides, and many hybrid conjugates, have been exhaustively researched to improve the existing support and also to develop novel PEMFC/DMFC catalyst support. One of the main challenges in the immediate future is to develop new catalyst supports that improve the durability of the catalyst layer and, in a best-case scenario, also impact the electronic properties of the active phase to leapfrog to improve catalyst kinetics. [Pg.116]
