Polymer science colloid ideas

In 1920 Herman Staudinger formulated the macromolecular hypothesis there was a special class of organic colloids of high viscosity that were composed of long chains (A1,A2). This revolutionary idea was argued throughout important areas of chemistry (A3). One of the most important experiments was provided by Herman Mark, who showed that crystalline polymers that had cells of ordinary sizes had only a few mers in each cell, but that the mers were connected to those in the next cell. Eventually the idea of long-chained molecules formed one of the most important cornerstones in the development of modem polymer science. [Pg.232]

This somewhat critical situation may be resolved by the determination of specific and general physical and chemical regularities governing the formation and behavior of polymeric foams, which requires the use of a wide range of ideas and techniques developed in other sciences physical and colloidal chemistry, physicochemical mechanics, rheology, thermodynamics, physics of polymers, physics and mechanics of non-continuous media, physics of surface and transfer phenomena, chemical physics of oxidation and degradation processes, etc. [Pg.10]
