Polymer blend encapsulation technique

Thermal methods include differential scaiming calorimetry, thermomechanical analysis, hot stage microscopy, and a new technique referred to as "photo DSC." Two dynamic mechanical analysis techniques have been developed, the first employing a perforated shim stock support, and the second utilizing polymer blend encapsulation. 

Over the past several years we have applied dynamic mechanical analysis to the study of the polymer liquid state. The principal requirement in being able to use DMA in this respect is to provide some means of support for the liquid phase material through temperatures well above its Tg (or T ) softening point range. Two techniques have been developed and will be reported on here. The first technique employs a perforated shim support upon which samples are coated. IL-dissolved cellulose can easily be reconstituted in water in controlled architectures (fibers, membranes, beads, fiocs, etc.) using conventional extrusion spinning or forming techniques. By incorporating functional additives into the solution before reconstitution. Professor Rogers can prepare blended or composite materials. The incorporated functional additives can be either dissolved (e.g., dyes, complexants, other polymers) or dispersed (e.g., nanoparticles, clays, enzymes) in the IL before or after dissolution of the cellulose. With this simple, noncovalent approach, one can readily prepare encapsulated cellulose composites of tunable architecture, functionality, and rheology.
