Quartz filled polyethylene

The higher thermal conductivity of inorganic fillers increases the thermal conductivity of filled polymers. Nevertheless, a sharp decrease in thermal conductivity around the melting temperature of crystalline polymers can still be seen with filled materials. The effect of filler on thermal conductivity for PE-LD is shown in Fig. 2.5 [22], This figure shows the effect of fiber orientation as well as the effect of quartz powder on the thermal conductivity of low density polyethylene. [Pg.41]

Adsorption of Hg nuclides on silicon detectors, as in the successful experiment with Hs04, proved experimentally not feasible, since Hg was adsorbed on quartz surfaces only at temperatures of -150 °C and below. However, Hg adsorbed quantitatively on Au, Pt, and Pd surfaces at room temperature. As little as 1 cm2 of Au or Pd surface was sufficient to adsorb Hg atoms nearly quantitatively from a stream of 1 1/min He. Therefore, detector chambers containing a pair of Au or Pd coated PIPS detectors were constructed. Eight detector chambers (6 Au and 2 Pd) were connected in series by Teflon tubing. The detector chambers were positioned inside an assembly of 84 3He filled neutron detectors (in a polyethylen moderator) in order to simultaneously detect neutrons accompanying spontaneous fission events, see Figure 27. [Pg.278]

In low temperature studies, it is preferable to mount the crystal in a flow cell [215]. This permits the gradual change of cryoprotectant concentration as the temperature is lowered and substrate is introduced into the crystal. A quartz capillary is attached to a brass support by epoxy cement and a tight-fitting polyethylene tube sealed to the bottom of the capillary. The capillary is filled with protein mother liquor solution. The crystal is introduced to the top and allowed to settle either on to a bed of pipe cleaner fibres placed on top of the polyethylene tube as support or on to a support made by previously introducing a constriction into the quartz capillary. The crystal may be secured further by additional fibres. The inlet polyethylene tube is sealed to the top of the capillary. The inlet and outlet tubes are then connected to the reservoir and sink, respectively (Fig. 13). [Pg.397]

The cell is constituted by two metallic holders both of them have a eentral hole through which the light beam passes, and two other small holes that are used to fill the cell with the solution. These two holders sandwieh two quartz windows and then they are screwed together. By means of suitable spacers it is possible to leave a thin cavity between the quartz windows that is filled with the solution. In this thin cavity a polyethylene spacer (ca. 150 pm thick) with melt-sealed eleetrodes is also contained. WE and CE are metallic minigrids and a Ag wire plays the role of quasi reference electrode (QRE), the potential of whieh ean be considered constant for a short time interval. [Pg.222]
