In the aromatic-ring-annelated oxepin series the resonance effect is clearly the major influence dominating other factors (e.g. temperature, solvent, etc.) which affect the oxepin-arene oxide equilibrium. It is however very difficult to exclude the presence of a minor (spectroscopically undetectable) contribution from either tautomer at equilibrium. This problem has been investigated by the synthesis of chiral arene oxides from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The presence of oxepin (26) in equilibrium with naphthalene 1,2-oxide has been excluded by the synthesis of the optically active arene oxide which showed no evidence of racemization in solution at ambient temperature via the achiral oxepin (26) <79JCS(Pl)2437>.

Twenty previously unreported polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were synthesized by condensing mixtures of 1-phenalenone-type ketones. These PAHs were isolated and identified by using field-ionization mass spectrometry, spectrofluorometry, and UV-visible absorbance spectrometry. The spectrometry and chromatography of these and other PAHs were compared. Correlations between the steric strain and the spectral valley depths between maximums, or chromatographic retention, were found. Steric effects were not the only factors affecting retention resonance stability also appeared to increase retention. 

Formation, factors affecting concentrations, legal limits and occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in smoked meat products and smoke flavor additives are briefly reviewed by Simko. The most widely employed techniques such as thin-layer chromatography (TLC), gas chromatography (GC), and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) are evaluated.
