Factors Affecting Performance. There are many factors that affect both the choice of a particular thermal treatment and its performance. Chief among these are waste characteristics, temperature, residence time, mixing or turbulence, and air supply. 

The most important factors affecting performance are operating temperature, surface velocity, contaminant concentration and composition, catalyst properties, and the presence or absence of poisons or inhibitors. 

This assumption is based partly on experimental evidence that shows a log-linear relationship between the evaluation of the factors affecting performance on maintenance tasks, and actual performance on the tasks, Pontecorvo (1965). In order to calculate the constants A and B in the equation, at least two tasks with known SLIs and error probabilities must be available in the set of tasks being evaluated. 

Diesels, gas turbines and steam turbines are the more commonly used prime movers for the generation of electrical power. Additionally, the steam turbine can be employed in combination with either the diesel or gas turbine for combined cycle operation. The following describes the basic operation of each of these prime movers in relation to its associated power-generating scheme and reviews the more significant factors affecting performance and efficiency. Further information on the actual plant and installation is given later in Section 15.6. 

If valid and useful relationships are to be established, it is essential that the factors affecting performance be recognised and form part of the test record. Since the performance is determined by interactions between the coating, the substrate and the surrounding environment against which protection is sought, significant factors and their interrelationships will vary with the nature of the service. 

Other factors affecting performance include the presence of toxic material, the redox potential, salinity of the groundwater, light intensity, hydraulic conductivity of the soil, and osmotic potential. The rate of biological treatment is higher for more permeable soils or aquifers. Bioremediation is not applicable to soils with very low permeability, because it would take a long time for the cleanup process unless many more wells were installed, thus raising the cost.

Factors Affecting Performance. The flame resistance of a textile fiber is affected by the chemical nature of the fiber, its ease of combustion, the fabric weight and construction, the efficiency of the flame retardant, the environment, and laundering conditions.
