Polyanilines, synthesis colloids

The inter-relationship between colloid and polymer chemistries is completed by colloidal polymer particles. The formation of 50-nm-diameter, 100- to 200-nm-long polyaniline fibrils in a poly(acrylic acid)-template-guided polymerization, similar in many ways to those produced from polymerized SUVs (see above), provides a recent example of polymer colloids [449], The use of poly(styenesulfonic acid) as a template yielded globular polyaniline particles which were found to be quite different morphologically from those observed in the regular chemical synthesis of polyaniline [449].

Ordered 3D arrays of polyaniline [PANI] inverse opals can also fabricated via electrochemical methods by using colloidal crystals of polystyrene beads as sacrificial templates as shown in Fig. 1.19 [208]. Compared with films obtained by chemical synthesis, the inverse opaline samples obtained by electrochemistry had a much higher structural quality. Such PANI inverse opals were prepared...

Gospodinova et al. have reported [160] the preparation of colloidal polyaniline by polymerizing aniline in a 10% polyvinyl alcohol solution. However, this in-situ polymerization of aniline in hosts matrix requires a post-synthesis work-up is required to remove impurities. 

The various commercial water-soluble polymers used for the synthesis of polypyrrole colloids are rather ineffective for the preparation of sterically stabilized polyaniline colloids and usually fail to prevent macroscopic precipitation [46]. One exception to this rule is poly(vinyl alcohol), but even here a relatively high stabilizer concentration is required for the quantitative formation...
