Application of Additives to Silk. Deacidifying Agent. This material is ethoxymagnesium ethyl carbonate dissolved in trichlorotrifluoroethane (Wei To Associates). It has been extensively used as an alkaline buffering agent to protect paper and cellulosic textiles from aging (7,8,21). Samples were dipped one at a time in the solution for 30 s and then dried flat on a sheet of poly(methyl methacrylate). Poly(acrylates) and poly(methacrylates) form another class of common polymers with saturated carbon chain backbone. Polyacrylates can be considered vinyl polymers with the -COOR group attached at every other carbon atom in the chain. However, due to their common use and particular properties, polyacrylates form a separate polymer class together with polymethacrylates. Among the most common polymers from this class are those obtained from acrylic acid methyl ester (PMA) and methylacrylic (methacrylic) acid methyl ester (PMMA). Acrylic polymers have many practical applications in automotive industry, in the production of medical materials, paints, coatings and lacquers, adhesives, textiles, and synthetic leather. More than 2 million tons of poly(ethylene terephthalate), commonly referred to as PET or PETE, are produced in the United States each year for use in beverage bottles, apparel, tire cord, film for photography, food packi ing, coatings for microwave and conventional ovens, and home furnishings. Polyester textile fibers are marketed under such names as Dacron and Terylene. Films of the same polyester, when magnetically coated, are used to make audiotapes and videotapes. This film. Mylar, has unusual strength and can be rolled into sheets 1/30 the thickness of a human hair. [Pg.338]

Many of the so-called thermoplastic, biodegradable natural polymers, known as poly(hydroxyalkanoates), and some synthetic polymers such as poly(lactides) can be made into fibers by cold drawing, melt spinning or thermal drawing [2, 3]. These polymers can also be extended as sheets rather than fibers. These sheets are known as films which are not tme textiles because they are not made of fibers [1]. Nonetheless, these films of poly(hydroxyalkanoates) or poly(lactides) have the same chemical properties as the corresponding fibers, so for convenience, films are often used in biodegradation studies. [Pg.2]
