Poly linear polymers

The linear polymer of PX, poly(p-xylylene) (PPX) (2), is formed as a VDP coating in the parylene process. The energetics of the polymerization set it apart from all other known polymerizations and enable it to proceed as a vapor deposition polymerization. [Pg.431]

It has already been shown (e.g. Chapters 20 and 21) that the insertion of a p-phenylene into the main chain of a linear polymer increased the chain stiffness and raised the heat distortion temperature. In many instances it also improved the resistance to thermal degradation. One of the first polymers to exploit this concept commercially was poly(ethylene terephthalate) but it was developed more with the polycarbonates, polysulphone, poly(phenylene sulphides) and aromatic polyketones. [Pg.730]

Both thermosets and thermoplastics are used as food-contact materials, though thermoplastics predominate in this appfication. Examples of the former are phenol- and urea-formaldehyde, while probably the best known example of the latter is low-density poly(ethylene). Other linear polymers are used include high-density poly(ethylene), poly(propylene), and PVC, all of which find quite extensive use. The preparation of poly(m-carborane-siloxane) polymers has also been successfully achieved directly from the carborane monomer.22 The reaction used is shown in scheme 9. Here, the direct salt elimination reaction between dilithiocarborane and a dichlorosiloxane (e.g., 1,5-dichlorohexamethyltrisiloxane) results in the formation of linear polymers with a molecular-weight (M ) typically of 6800 dalton. However, the reported literature detailing this approach is very limited indeed, and the reaction has not found significant use.
