Sloop and Lerner [132] showed that SEI formation can be affected by treatment of the cross-linked polymer, poly-[oxymeth-ylene oligo(oxyethylene)] (PEM) with an alkylating agent. Cross-linked films of PEM do not form a stable interface with lithium however, upon treatment with methyl iodide, / Ej stabilizes at 2000 Hem"1. Such an SEI is characterized by low conductivity, from 10 to 10 Q-Icm2, which is linear over the temperature range of 25-85 °C. [Pg.449]

Another widely used surgical procedure is knee replacement. In this operation the natural components of the knee joint are replaced with an artificial femoral component made of metal that interfaces with a tibial plateau made of ultra-high molar mass poly(ethylene). Implantation of these joints is becoming more widespread, though the demand for them is not as great as for hip replacement. [Pg.147]

A series of polymine-graft copolymers of styrene [92-95] and hydroxyethyl methacrylate [96-98] were found to form a microdomain structure and exhibit unique biomedical behavior at the interface with living cells, such as blood platelets and lymphocytes. The most intensive studies were made with poly(hydroxyethyl methacryIate)-0ra/t-polyamine copolymers (HA) ... [Pg.28]

Plastic microdevices for high-throughput screening with MS detection were also prepared for detection of aflatoxins and barbiturates. These devices incorporated concentration techniques interfaced with electrospray ionization MS (ESI-MS) through capillaries [2], The microfluidic device for aflatoxin detection employed an affinity dialysis technique, in which a poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane was incorporated in the microchip between two channels. Small molecules were dialyzed from the aflatoxin/antibody complexes, which were then analyzed by MS. A similar device was used for concentrating barbiturate/antibody complexes using an affinity ultrafiltration technique. A barbiturate solution was mixed with antibodies and then flowed into the device, where uncomplexed barbiturates were removed by filtration. The antibody complex was then dissociated and electrokinetically mobilized for MS analysis. In each case, the affinity preconcentration improved the sensitivity by at least one to two orders of magnitude over previously reported detection limits. [Pg.429]

The spectrum of CO on Pt(poly) is shown in Fig. 5.9 [2]. This spectrum is significant as it demonstrated the possibility of obtaining SFG from electrochemical interfaces with very good S/N ratio. Further, the results are comparable to those obtained using infrared spectroscopy. In the same report, Tadjeddine and coworkers also presented potential-dependent SFG spectra of CN" on a Pt electrode. Since the SFG process is coherent, the phase of each resonance is present in the spectra. As noted earlier, phase information can be used to determine molecular orientation at the surface. For example, the phase information can determine whether CN is surface coordinated through the nitrogen or the carbon atom [24]. [Pg.177]

The first set of experiments that will be considered has examined the ability of random copolymers of styrene and methyl methacrylate to improve the interfacial strength between polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate). Using the asymmetric double cantilever beam technique, the researchers have found that a diblock copolymer (50/50 composition, Mw = 282,000) creates an interface with strength of400 J/m2. When utilizing a random copolymer however, it was found that the strongest interface (70% styrene, Mw =... [Pg.75]

It has been demonstrated that 2,5-bis-(chloromethyl)-l,3,4-oxadiazole can undergo anionic polymerization. With sodium alcoholate, poly(l,3,4-oxa-diazole-2,5-diyl-l,2-vinylene) is formed, however the reaction cannot be controlled even at temperatures as low as —40°C. Instead, the exothermic reaction can be controlled by performing the polymerization at a toluene/ water interface with tetrabutylphosphonium bromide as a phase transfer catalyst. The mechanism is shown in Figure 10.7. [Pg.337]

The dissolution of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) in water was studied by measuring the temporal evolution of the rubbery-solvent interface with the aid of a photographic technique. The effect of the polymer molecular weight on the dissolution mechanism was studied. It was observed that as the PEG molecular weight was increased, the gel layer thickness increased, indicative of disentanglement-controlled dissolution. [Pg.431]

The photoconductivity of the polymers was measured by using a sandwich cell composed of ITO / polymer / Au. Both current-potential (i-E) curves of poly-(b) and poly-(c) show that each contact between the polymer and the electrode is ohmic. In these polymers, it is confirmed that a Schottky junction was not formed at the interface with either the ITO or Au. [Pg.470]
