At AWE, the Lewis acid-catalyzed bulk polymerization route has been the main synthesis route to poly(m-carborane-siloxane) elastomers. Our selection has been based on considerations of safety, availability of key reagents, and ease of scale-up operations. An understanding of the physical and chemical properties of these materials, and how these properties can be modified through the synthesis process, is essential in order to develop materials of controlled characteristics. [Pg.105]

A series of new amino acid derivatives having pendant nucleic acid bases was prepared by the reaction of L-lysine and L-glutamic acid with the nucleic acid bases. These amino acids were further polymerized by using the N-carboxyamino acid anhydride ( NCA ) method. Alternatively, the nucleic acid base substituted poly-L-lysines were also prepared by using polymer reactions which include the reaction of carboxyethyl derivatives of the bases onto poly-L-lysine. Physico-chemical properties of the polymers obtained were given. [Pg.369]

Although Parylene-N possesses an outstanding combination of physical, electrical, and chemical properties, the benzylic C—H bonds present are potential sites for thermal and oxidative degradation. It is well known that replacing a C— bond with a C—F bond not only enhances the thermal stability of the resulting polymer, but also reduces the dielectric constant. Because incorporation of fluorine is known to impart thermal and oxidative stability, it became of interest to prepare poly(a,a,a, a -tetrafluoro- p -xylylene), Parylene-F Joesten reported that the decomposition temperature of poly(tetrafluoro-j9-xylylene) is ca. 530°C. Thus, it seemed that the fluorinated analog would satisfy many of the exacting requirements for utility as an on-chip dielectric medium. [Pg.279]

The Pd-catalyzed C-C coupling (Sonogashira coupling) was applied to polymer synthesis about 20 years ago [23-25], and has especially been developed for the synthesis of n-conjugated poly(aryleneethynylene)s (PAEs) (for reviews, see refs. [16,26-33]). Recently other synthetic routes for PAEs were also developed, e.g., the alkyne metathesis method [28, 34] and the coupling reaction of =C-MR3 with R X (M=Si [35, 36] or Sn [37, 38]). In this review, we are concerned with the synthesis and chemical properties of PAEs with heteroaromatic rings. [Pg.183]

Pang, Li, and Barton indicated, based on viscosity data, that PAEs had a stiff structure in solution [43]. A PAE shows a Mark-Houwink constant as high as a= 1.92 [43], revealing that it has a very stiff structure, similar to rodlike poly-(pyridine-2,5-diyl) [65,66]. Liquid crystalline behavior of PAEs with a meso-gen has been reported [45]. The chemical properties of PAEs have also been investigated with oligomeric model compounds [67-76]. [Pg.190]

A-Vinylpyrrolidone polymers are of special interest in medicine in the process of detoxification as well as for binding and removal of undesirable metallic ions and known as chelatotherapeutic agents [34]. Free radical copolymers of poly(lV-vinylpyrrolidone) and copolymer of JV-vinylpyrrolidone and vinylacetate, vinylamine, vinylamidosuceinic arid are known to bind Cu2+ and other transition metal ions, and the resultant complexes exhibit interesting physico-chemical properties. [Pg.99]

Tungsten-based catalysts with a Lewis base promoter are used in the polymerization of dicyclopentadiene also isolated from the C5 stream-cracker fraction.150,155 The product poly(dicyclopentadiene) or Metton resin has unusual physical and chemical properties. It is processed together with elastomers to increase viscosity of the end product by using reaction injection molding (RIM) technology.155... [Pg.711]

The chemical properties of PVAc are diose of an aliphatic ester. Thus, acidic or basic hydrolysis produces poly(vinyl alcohol) and acetic acid or die acetate of the basic cation. [Pg.1677]
