Pollen Screening for Disease Resistance Using Phytotoxins. A liquid shake culture was made using a 4 1 (V-8 juice glass distilled water) medium. The pH was adjusted to 5.8, and the medium sterilized at 121°C for 15 min. Two hundred and fifty ml of medium in 500 ml Erlenmeyer flasks was inoculated with Fusarium and Verticillium races supplied by Dr. Ken Kimball, Moran Seed Co., Davis, CA, and shaken for 7 days at 24°C. The medium was then centrifuged at 1000 rpm to separate out the mass of spores and filaments. The filtrate was run through a... [Pg.115]

Just as a Coulter Counter or a flow cytometer can automate or at least increase efficiency in counting heterospecific pollen transfer, use of artificial germination media still is an effective method of screening for pollen allelopathy. The fundamental approach recommended has not changed much in the last decade, i.e. sequentially dilute extracts from non-macerated... [Pg.209]

If the ozone level is too low, nothing will happen. If the level is too high, elongation will cease and the tube will die. These events occur within a narrow dose range (5-35 ppm for 5-15 min) and can therefore be used to study the threshold levels of sensitivity for pollen of any variety. Other work has shown that relative sensitivity of pollen to ozone is positively correlated to the ozone sensitivity of the pollen parent (43). Sulzbach and Pack (46) have also demonstrated that pollen sensitivity to atmospheric pollutants may be a useful tool for screening plant materials to learn their relative tolerance to pollutants and to attempt to discover selection pressures that may be affecting plant pcpulations. [Pg.38]

How to Attract Plant pollen and nectar flowers leave weeds such as dandelions, wild carrot, and yarrow between crop plants purchased H. convergens is effective in greenhouses with screened vents but is not advisable for release in gardens, because they will fly away. [Pg.301]

Fresh air filters are an important part of the ventilation system and contribute to the health ot, crop. Their function is to screen out atmospheric dust particles like smoke, silica, soot and decay biological matter. Atmospheric dust also contains spores, bacteria and plant pollen, some of which, are detrimental to mushroom culture. Furthermore, spores and microorganisms originating within" f the cropping room can also be spread by air movement. To counteract this clanger, some mush- ... [Pg.70]
