Polarized light screen

Polarized Light Screen (PLS). The PLS technique (23,24) was used extensively to obtain Immediate information about the macroscopic phase behavior of solutions. Diffuse light is transmitted through a polarizer and an analyzer. The sample is placed between the two polarizers, and system behavior is observed as shown in Figure 1. 

The coal is crushed to pass a number 20 (850- xm) screen (with minimal fines production) and the particles are formed into a briquette held together with a binder. One side of the briquette is polished using successively finer abrasives until a smooth surface that is scratch-free, smear-free, and char-free is obtained. A metallurgical, or opaque-ore, microscope is employed to determine the reflectance with vertical illumination using polarized light. 

All parenterally injected solutions should be checked for particulate contamination but the above procedure is clearly impractical as a bulk screening exercise. Those products contaminated with particulate matter should be rejected. In practice, all products may be tested individually by humans against split white/black screens and/or under polarized light for obvious particulate contamination and again there is a method described in pharmacopoeias based on the split screen technique. Nowadays optical control equipment can take over this arduous and boring employment. 

Rochon prism An optical device consisting of two quartz prisms the first, cut parallel to the optic axis, receives the light the second, with the optic axis at right angles, transmits the ordinary ray without deviation but the extraordinary ray is deflected and can be absorbed by a screen. The device can be used to produce plane-polarized light and it can also be used with ultraviolet radiation. 

In this demonstration, chiral and achiral transparent crystals are examined with polarized light emitted from an iPad or a tablet. The crystals are placed over the device s screen and viewed through a second polarized filter. Whereas achiral crystals seem transparent, much as they are under normal room light, the chiral crystals appear blue. A]...

When nematic liquid crystals are arranged in thin layers, their ability to transmit scattered or polarized light changes by applying an electric field. This phenomenon can be utilized for alphanumeric and analog displays, image converters, and matrix-type picture screens. 

The nonpolar and semipolar nitride devices also have the potential to use the polarization light emission. This property is especially beneficial for backlighting liquid crystal displays (LCD) and projectors. The polarized light sources do not require polarizing filters and thus the screens can be made thinner, lighter, and more energy efficient.
