Image converter

Inherent unsharpness U of the imaging system An edge of highly absorbent material that is mounted in the middle of the image converter, is used to define the course and width of the "blurred" edge. The unsharpness is defined between 10% and 90% of the amplitude of the output signal. 

Contrast Ratio Cq The contrast ratio is established on the basis of the ratio of the amplitude of the unattenuated radiation to the amplitude after attenuation through a test piece. This test piece is a lead disk which is mounted in the middle of the image converter it masks approximately 10% of the surface of the image converter. 

Linearity Differential and integral distortion Vd,i and homogeneity Fld,i are defined at various locations of the image converter input to be able to establish the linearity of the imaging system. 

Flomogeneity Likewise, IQIs according to EN 462-1 or EN 462-2 can be used to monitor homogeneity. Typical inhomogeneities are caused by burns in the input window of the image converter.

As an example we mention the sensitivity at low light intensities of the human visual system which according to a careful analysis by Rose (1) is close to the theoretical limit. The system thus can be considered as an image converter of the highest possible sensitivity, though it uses materials of quite a different nature from those used by technologists.
