For a circularly polarized light experiment, one can measure the cross sections for either right (r) or left (1) polarized scattered light. Suppose that right polarized light is made incident on a Raman active sample. The general expressions for the Raman cross sections are [176]... [Pg.1221]

Circular dichroism (c.d.) spectroscopy measures the difference in absorption between left- and right-circularly polarized light by an asymmetric molecule. The spectrum results from the interaction between neighboring groups, and is thus extremely sensitive to the conformation of a molecule. Because the method may be applied to molecules in solution, it has become popular for monitoring the structure of biological molecules as a function of solvent conditions. [Pg.73]

Ever since Pasteur s work with enantiomers of sodium ammonium tartrate, the interaction of polarized light has provided a powerful, physical probe of molecular chirality [18]. What we may consider to be conventional circular dichroism (CD) arises from the different absorption of left- and right-circularly polarized light by target molecules of a specific handedness [19, 20]. However, absorption measurements made with randomly oriented samples provide a dichroism difference signal that is typically rather small. The chirally induced asymmetry or dichroism can be expressed as a Kuhn g-factor [21] defined as ... [Pg.269]

When a material exhibits different indices of refraction for the right- and left-hand components of the circular vectors, the velocities in these directions are different and the plane of polarized light undergoes rotation. For the left- and right-hand vectors, the indices of refraction are... [Pg.588]

Optical Activity Certain media are optically active, which means that they interact with plane polarized light by changing the direction of polarization. A simple explanation of this effect is that optically active material interacts differently with left and right circularly polarized light respectively, for instance by exhibiting different indices of refraction with respect to these two types of polarized light. If this is the case one or the other of the circular components of plane polarized light would lag behind in that medium. [Pg.139]
