Polarization circularly polarized light

An interesting aspect of two-photon spectroscopy is that some polarization infonnation is obtainable even for randomly oriented molecules in solution by studymg the effect of the relative polarization of die two photons. This is readily done by comparing linearly and circularly polarized light. Transitions to A states will absorb linearly polarized light more strongly than circularly polarized light. For a circularly polarized light experiment, one can measure the cross sections for either right (r) or left (1) polarized scattered light. Suppose that right polarized light is made incident on a Raman active sample. The general expressions for the Raman cross sections are [176]...

The macroscopic optical analysis of these effects requires the introduction of two complex indexes of refraction for the ferromagnetic material, one for lefr-circu-larly polarized light and another for right-circularly polarized light, which to first order, are given by... 

In general, it may be said that enantiomers have identical properties in a symmetrical environment, but their properties may differ in an unsymmetrical environment. Besides the important differences previously noted, enantiomers may react at different rates with achiral molecules if an optically active catalyst is present they may have different solubilities in an optically active solvent., they may have different indexes of refraction or absorption spectra when examined with circularly polarized light, and so on. In most cases these differences are too small to be useful and are often too small to be measured. 

Circular dichroism (c.d.) spectroscopy measures the difference in absorption between left- and right-circularly polarized light by an asymmetric molecule. The spectrum results from the interaction between neighboring groups, and is thus extremely sensitive to the conformation of a molecule. Because the method may be applied to molecules in solution, it has become popular for monitoring the structure of biological molecules as a function of solvent conditions.
