Coniine (12), impHcated by Plato in the death of Socrates, is the major toxic constituent of Conium maculatum L. (poison hemlock) and, as pointed out eadier, was apparendy the first alkaloid to be synthesized. For years it was thought that coniine was derived from lysine (24), as were many of its obvious relatives containing reduced piperidine nuclei and a side chain, eg, peUetierine (46). However, it is now known (99) that coniine is derived from a polyketooctanoic acid [7028-40-2] (138), CgH QO, or some other similar straight chain analogue. 

The ubiquitousness of the personal computer and the increasing power of the program packages available for it have shifted the emphasis away from large, mainframe-based systems like PLATO. Instead, graphics are included in utihty programs such as equation solvers, spreadsheet processors, and word processors. 

It is thought that /ki chimedes had a lower regard for his mechanical work however, this is difficult to validate because few writings about his mechanical devices remain. Aixhiniedcs used mechanics as a tool to think about abstract problems, rather than as a field of study itself. Contemporaries such as Plato frowned upon such a link between geometry and mechanics they considered it as a corruption of the purity of geometry. 

In the sixteenth century it was possible to understand the universe by means of anatomy. Plato in the Timaens had stated that the body of the Cosmos was harmonised by proportion and brought into existence. At its central point was man, consisting of body and soul, material and immaterial substance. The higher soul consisted of mind and reason, the former shared with the Divine Intellect, although...
