Orbital motion offers the capability of achieving high relative velocities without sacrificing tool footprint. This point is especially important as the semiconductor industry prepares to make the transition to 300-mm wafers. Several CMP tool concepts have been developed based on orbital motion. Some orbit the carrier while rotating the platen [13]. Others orbit the polishing pad while rotating the carrier [14]. Another design involves orbital (as well as arbitrary nonrotational) motion on a fixed polish pad [15]. 

The top of the reaction chamber is hinged to permit access to the lower electrode (platen) that holds the wafers. This arrangement is illustrated in Figure 20. The platen is anodized, while the upper electrode is bare aluminum. The upper electrode housing is flame spray coated with aluminum oxide to eliminate electrical discharges above the upper electrode. The platen has pockets to accept wafers and maintain them in fixed positions as it rotates.

Various tool architectures have addressed the problem in different ways. Fixed platen architectures often control the temperature of the platen through a recirculated heat exchange method (Figure 1.29), and sometimes they also control the temperature of the slurry being transported to the pad surface.

Injection molds have two main parts, or platens. Typically the half containing the hollow cavity side is attached to the injection molding machine, and is referred to as the fixed platen. Because the melted plastic enters through this side, it is also called the hot side, or the hot half (Fig. 11.2). 

BS EN ISO 3385 [61] uses three test pieces (right parallelepipeds 380 x 380 x 50 mm) that are each subjected to a constant load of 750 N during one load cycle at a rate of 70 per minute. The load is applied by way of an indentor of diameter 250 mm (Fig. 18) that is rigidly fixed to its guide but allowed movement in the vertical plane as the specimen and indentor approach their nearest position. The indentor surface is smooth but not polished. The machine is capable of oscillating either the platen or the indentor so that the constant load is attained at one time during the cycle.

The clamping unit consists of one fixed platen and one movable platen. One mold half each is installed on one of the platens.

Moments before the operator restarted the press by pushing the start button on the control panel, the packer had stepped to Ae side of the press and leaned into the platen area to remove the debris from the back of the press. As the operator turned toward the press, she saw the packer trapped between the platen and the fixed die mounted surface. The packer died as a result of a fractured skull.
