The largest market for elastomer-based adhesives is that of lamination (see Laminates). Modem office furniture having Formica as a surfacing material is made with an elastomer-based adhesive. Tile adhesives for ceramic or carpet tile are also elastomer-based and usually solvent appHed. Paper adhesives and shoe manufacture also use substantial quantities of mbber-based materials. Solvent-weld adhesives are used to join plastic plumbing and to repair vinyl sheeting. [Pg.235]

Plastic welding Joining of finished plastic components by fusing materials either with or without the addition of plastic from another source. [Pg.156]

The welded joint differs from all others in that an attempt is made to produce a continuity of homogeneous material which may or may not involve the incorporation of a filler material. There are a large variety of processes by which this may be achieved, most of which depend upon the application of thermal energy to bring about a plastic or molten state of the metal surfaces to be joined. The more common processes used are classified in Table 9.6. [Pg.90]

Ultrasonic head forming and welding is a fast assembly technique. It is a very rapid operation of about 2 seconds or less and lends itself to full automation. In this process high-frequency vibrations and pressure are applied to the products to be joined, heat is generated at the plastic causing it to flow, and, when the vibrations cease, the melt solidifies. The heart of the ultrasonic system is the horn, which is made of a metal that can be carefully tuned to the frequency of the system. The manufacture of the horn and its shape is normally developed by the manufacturer of the equipment. The results from this operation are not only economical, but also most satisfactory from a quality control standpoint. [Pg.270]

Flexible PVC is appreciated for the versatility of its characteristics according to the formulation. Significant quantities of fillers and plasticizers are used to optimize some of the characteristics such as behaviour at low temperatures, fire resistance, flexibility and hardness in the elastomer range, low price, electric insulation, easy welding and joining, possibility of transparency, food contact, fireproofing. [Pg.311]

Plastic boilermaking, very similarly to metal boilermaking, allows the realization of simple and developable geometrical parts, by cold or hot forming, machining and assembly by welding or joining of plates, tubes and blanks. [Pg.757]

A variety of techniques is available for joining plastics to themselves or to other materials—mechanical fastening, welding, and bonding with adhesives—and all are used extensively. Each method has both advantages and drawbacks for plastics, bonding might be said to be preferable when they are to be joined with dissimilar materials. [Pg.104]
