Plastic plugs

In the design of the detonator attention must also be paid to the effects of the liberation of gas which, though small, is still sufficient to require attention. As the speed of the delay composition is affected by pressure, it is necessary that the free space in the detonator should be carefully controlled. Also, the plug which seals the leading wires in place must withstand this pressure for more than the delay period of the detonator. This task is made more difficult by conduction, along the metal walls of the detonator shell, of heat liberated by the fusehead and the delay composition. Plastic plugs in particular are liable to soften and be ejected from the detonator with probable failure of burning of the delay column. 

First find the two wires in the rocket tail section which disappear through a plastic plug into the rocket motor. (In the current model of the 3.5, these are the two wires covered with clear plastic.)... 

To prepare the rocket for nonelectric launching, first remove the plastic plug (previously referred to) which blocks the motor vent tube by prying loose with the pointed handle of crimpers. 

Break off at least 20 safety match heads and drop them down into the cavity beyond where the plastic plug was removed. 

Because removal of the plastic plug lowers the initial pressure, the range of the rocket when fired nonlectrically will be a little reduced and aiming should be a little higher. 

The Airdox device is very safe towards methane and coal-dust. Safety is especially increased by the improvement of the bursting disk which is fitted with a plastic plug closing the charge.

In the United States, lead azide manufactured for military use is packaged in steel drums under 50 50 water-ethanol solution however, isopropanol may be substituted for the ethanol. The drums are stored in above-ground magazines, and surveillance consists of periodic checks of the drum exterior and a yearly inspection of the liquid level. The top of each drum is fitted with a clear plastic plug to allow a more stringent control of the liquid level. 

Carbon bridges, consisting of nothing more than a dab of water-based colloidal carbon black between two closely-set conductive areas in a molded plastic plug, are the resistors in the most sensitive electric primers and they use one of the most heat-sensitive, stable prime explosives, i.e. normal lead styphnate with some lacquer, as in the Electric Fuze Primer Mk 121.
