Plant emergencies objective

Different ERPs (i.e., different areas of evacuation and, hence, different number of evacuees), result in different population distributions as a function of time, and thus in different doses and corresponding health consequences. In this section, some case studies are presented in order to demonstrate our methodology for multi-objective emergency response optimization around chemical plants. Two objectives are considered, i.e. minimize both the expected number of fatalities and the number of evacuees. The cases presented correspond to different types of accidents and different circumstances related to the emergency response issues... [Pg.353]

During the plant design the safety of process equipment is also recognized by layout. The objectives of layout are to minimize risk to personnel, to minimize escalation (both within the plant and to adjacent plants), and to ensure adequate emergency access. It is also essential to ensure adequate access for maintenance and operations. Plant layout is a crucial factor in the safety of a process plant because of e.g. segregation of different risks, containment of accidents and limitation of exposure. Safe plant layout is designed on the basis of design... [Pg.55]

In association with well-known health benefits related to the consumption of fruit- and vegetable-rich diets, research on the protective effects of plant-derived phenolic compounds (polyphenols) has developed notably in recent years. In particular, their antioxidant properties have been the objective of extensive research. However these phenolics are the target of an array of chemical reactions that, if confirmed to occur in vivo, would contribute to their health promoting effects. It is now emerging that both parent compounds and their metabolites produced after ingestion can regulate cell and tissue functions by both antioxidant and nonantioxidant mechanisms. This volume provides the latest evidence supporting these concepts. [Pg.603]

The methodology proposed in this chapter, is based on the determination of the Pareto Optimal set of solutions for multi-objective emergency response decision-making around chemical plants. Given the size of the decision space, the efficient set of solutions cannot be... [Pg.341]
